How can we transform everyday classroom reading into an active, highly engaging, and evidence-based practice? This lecture series brings together international experts Prof. John Nietfeld, Prof. Jackie Relyea, and doc. Kamila Urban, Ph.D. to explore the intersection of cognitive strategy instruction and modern educational technology.

The sessions will delve into the dynamic world of game-based learning environments, examining how these digital spaces can be leveraged to teach vital cognitive and metacognitive reading strategies. Drawing from recent classroom intervention data, the speakers will analyze the shift in how primary school students interact with texts when evidence-based practices are seamlessly integrated into regular instruction.
Jackie Relyea, Associate Professor, Literacy Education, NCSU
The talk will focus on elementary-grade reading interventions that integrate literacy with content learning and support students' language and knowledge development. It will explore how these interventions have been designed, implemented in classrooms, and evaluated in research, as well as what current evidence suggests about their impact on reading comprehension and content learning.
Kamila Urban, Associate Professor, Developmental Psychology, CU
The lecture will focus on changes in reading comprehension, metacognition, interest in reading, and perceived difficulty during an intervention based on cognitive and metacognitive reading strategies. It will be discussed how evidence-based reading practices implemented in regular classroom instruction may influence how primary school students work with texts.
