𝗙𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗵𝗼𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗟𝗧 & 𝗔𝗶𝗿𝗯𝘂𝘀: A space laser embarks on its first journey 🛰️🌍

A major milestone for climate research: our first laser for the MERLIN Earth observation mission is ready for the next step!
More than 15 years of research and development have gone into this laser system: together with our partner Airbus Defence and Space, the MERLIN laser was developed specifically for use in space – compact, ultra-robust and reliable for a mission lasting more than three years in orbit.

The first of two lasers has been successfully integrated into its special housing and transported to the Airbus site in Ottobrunn. There it will be tested under extreme conditions, similar to those the second, identical laser will be exposed to inside the satellite during the rocket launch and in space. This ensures that the MERLIN laser can master all the challenges ahead – the next step on its way into orbit.

Why is the MERLIN mission so important? Per kilogram, Methane is more than 25 times as harmful to the climate as CO₂. Using laser pulses, MERLIN will measure methane emissions – day and night, even when there is cloud cover. From an altitude of 500 km, MERLIN will thus provide the data basis for global methane monitoring and improved climate models.

Many thanks to the outstanding team and to our partners at Airbus Defence and Space and the German Space Agency at Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V., as well as for the funding provided by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (Bundesministerium für Forschung, Technologie und Raumfahrt)!

Innovation Meets Easter Tradition 🐣✨
What happens when high-tech meets a classic Easter egg?

Using the LIFT process (Laser-Induced Forward Transfer), we precisely transferred our institute’s logo as a conductive silver layer onto a dyed egg.
This demonstration illustrates how gentle, high-resolution laser techniques can be used for the structured transfer of functional materials—flexible, contactless, and highly precise.

While the result may be seasonally inspired, the underlying technology has a wide range of applications, including microelectronics, sensor technology, and medical engineering.

Wishing you a Happy Easter and lots of inspiration exploring innovative technologies!

Thanks to Ralph Domnick from Ara-Coatings GmbH & Co. KG for providing the LIFT foil.
