What VR application scenarios are available? - Part VIII (and end)
The VR Representation of RWTH Aachen University

Imagine you would like to study and/or do research at RWTH Aachen University, but unfortunately you do not have the opportunity to visit us here in Aachen. 🌍
No problem: simply use the VR Representation of RWTH Aachen University and find out about our teaching and research programmes at the information stands of the faculties. We will provide you with interesting information about your career at our university and give you the opportunity to explore RWTH Aachen from the comfort of your own home. 🏠
At certain times, our Rector, the Vice-Rector for Internationalisation and the Vice-Rector for Teaching will even be available for a personal conversation with their respective avatars. 🤝

All our modules are available for you to use directly on our server. We offer you an open source VR software solution, various application scenarios in the form of open educational resources and a server for the necessary communication between users, on which no user data is stored. All you need is a pair of VR goggles and some time to explore the scenes 😉.

We would love to hear your comments with suggestions, questions, criticism and/or praise.

What VR application scenarios are available? - Part VII
A Feel Good Place in VR

This scenario was originally created to introduce refugees to working in the catering business. But we also use it internally to have a coffee, a meal 🍽☕(completely calorie-free) or a game of chess ♟ with our guests in the VR world.
The scenario is very popular with newcomers to VR technology because they quickly realise that in VR you can not only discuss things but also interact haptically, just like in the real world. 🗣

All our modules are available for you to use directly on our server. We offer you an open source VR software solution, various application scenarios in the form of open educational resources and a server for the necessary communication between users, on which no user data is stored. All you need is a pair of VR goggles and some time to explore the scenes 😉.

What VR application scenarios are available? - Part VI
Project Sandbox

The 'Project Sandbox' is a VR showroom where any 2D or 3D model can be displayed in the centre. The example shown here is about the morphology of watercourses. 🌊 In addition to the central model, supplementary media in the form of videos, images, text, animations and websites can be displayed on four large screens. 🎥
This project sandbox can be easily adapted to a variety of teaching and learning scenarios. Hence the analogy with the sandbox where we used to create new worlds when we were kids 😉.

- Part V
University cooperation

RWTH Aachen University 🇩🇪 and GUtech in Oman 🇴🇲 have a long-standing partnership. As part of this, we developed specific teaching and learning scenarios for three GUtech lecturers to use with their students. To this end, we recreated the History of Science Centre, a spectacular building on the GUtech campus, and designed rooms for courses in Computer Science, Urban Planning & Architecture Design, and Logistics, Tourism and Service Management. The rooms are used as standard for on-site events and also for collaboration with students from RWTH Aachen University. 🤝

Due to the positive user experience, our team has received additional requests for use from other GUtech lecturers.

- Part IV
Student cooperation in project work

Students from RWTH Aachen University 🇩🇪 and Politecnico di Milano 🇮🇹 worked together on a project to analyse the possibilities and limitations of seawater desalination plants 💧. They were able to use a VR scenario in which they could operate such a plant. Parameters such as energy supply, resulting water availability and different agricultural crops could be used to simulate real-world scenarios. By collaborating via VR, the two groups were able to interact with their peers at the other site and iteratively find the best solutions for specific farming tasks. 🌱
The feedback from the students was very positive.

All our modules are available for you to use directly on our server. We offer you an open source VR software solution, various application scenarios in the form of open educational resources and a server for the necessary communication between users, on which no user data is stored. What VR application scenarios are available? - Part II
Assembly training for mobile flood protection walls

In addition to collaborative communication and project work, VR scenarios can also be used to simulate and train haptic processes. For example, we offer our students the opportunity to build mobile flood protection walls.🌊 Blind screws are loosened, supports are erected, dam beams are inserted and braced, and when everything is ready, a virtual flood can be used to test whether everything has been done correctly.

This VR scenario is compulsory for all students in an English-language Masters module on flood risk management. 👩‍🎓👨‍🎓

All our modules are available directly on our server. We offer you an open source VR software solution, several application scenarios in the form of open educational resources and a server for the necessary communication between users, on which no user data is stored. All you need is a pair of VR goggles and some time to explore the scenes 😉.

We would love to hear your comments with suggestions, questions, criticism and/or praise.

What VR application scenarios are available? - Part I

We start with the role play scenario. This is where our civil, environmental and industrial engineers learn how to behave in critical situations. 🚨 They are given the task of preparing a short 10-minute presentation on a specific topic. They present this in a VR scenario in front of the professor and any number of NPC avatars. After they have given their presentation without any reaction from the audience, the professor and the NPCs he controls intervene massively in a second run. The reactions of the avatars can be controlled on a scale from -5 to +5. While at level -1 the avatars only slightly express their dissatisfaction with what has been said, this reaction is continuously increased up to level -5 (at which point apples, tomatoes and other things fly around the lecturer's ears). 😮

Through this scenario, students should experience and learn how to communicate with resistance, e.g. at public meetings or similar events where they have to present their project results. 🧑‍🏫

After the second presentation, the students receive direct feedback from the professor on their performance. Positive reactions as well as possible ways of improvement are identified and discussed.

Overall, the students' reaction to this (now compulsory) assignment in two Masters modules is very positive. 👏 The students are very positively surprised by the immersive scenario and feel encouraged to reflect on their own communication behaviour.

All our modules are available for direct use on our server. We offer an open source VR software solution, various application scenarios in the form of open educational resources and a server for the necessary communication between users, on which no user data is stored. All you need is a pair of VR goggles and some time to explore the scenes 😉.

We look forward to your comments with suggestions, questions, criticism and/or praise.
