+++The Supermartingales (TU München) still on the 1st Rank with 120.97%!!!+++
+++2nd Rank for the PD Engineers with 92.13%+++
+++ 3rd Rank for the LUISS Blue Team with 77.55 %+++
+++Standings as of May 2nd 2014+++
+++Just 1!!! week left until the end of the competition+++

There is only one week left until the end of the University Trading Challenge 2013/2014. So what was happening during last week? Including the 5th place, there was no change regarding the ranking, just the performance of the different teams has slightly changed.

The Supermartingales are still on the first place with a great performance of 120.97 %, followed by the PD Engineers with 92.13% (last week, they had 93.65%). LUISS Blue from LUISS RM is still on the 3rd position with 77.55% overall performance, but compared to last week, they´ve gained an additional surplus of 6.6%. Their difference to the second place is just 14.58%, so maybe they can use some volatile movement to reach the 2nd place.

The gPs from Hs Augsburg ZSI may not have realized that they had the chance to take over the third place, by trading some positions. They have been idle for more than six weeks. Maybe, they have to fear that the Meravigli16 from Politecnico MI will take over their place. They´ve traded some positions and lost 1.56%. But they are still close to the team from Augsburg with 48.87%, one or two good trades, and they could take over the 4th rank.

The first five teams may have feared the volatility in the markets and the unpredictable development in the Ukraine, so that they´ve closed their positions. We will see how the last ranking will look like next Monday.

I Federiciani from Econ. Federico II NA has made a great performance 9.45% and took over the 6th place. Performing as well as last week, they might play a role within the top 5!
The guys from the team Vincitori have lost the 6th place and made a minus of 39.7%!, and are just on the 18th place now. Apparently, they took too much risk or traded just one position with high leverage. As we have seen last year, leverage can cause great returns, but also huge losses, especially in a volatile market environment.

From place seven to 26, all teams have a positive performance, and they are really close together. Therefore, for some teams, there will be the chance to climb up the ranking if they perform well. 75 teams are still participating in the ongoing University Trading Challenge 2013/2014. Again, today we have seen how volatile the markets are these days. The German Index DAX for example went down from 9,556 to 9,410, but closed at 9,537. This includes a gap of 127 points or 1.35%, just on one day.

We are really looking forward to the final ranking on next Monday. We hope the markets will develop in your favor. Have a nice week, and good luck.

+++Meravigli16 from Politecnico MI took over the lead+++
+++Standings as of March 21th, 2014+++

Again, one week of trading and very volatile stock markets is over. We have seen an upward as well as a downward movement due to the political situation including Russia and the Ukraine. The influence of the intricate political situation abated a little bit and the markets returned on focusing fundamental data and news from the economies.

But how did the teams within the University Trading Challenge 2014 perform within the last week? The PD Engineers from Ingegneria PD gained 3.39 % of performance, but unfortunately, not enough to maintain the first place. The team from Italy is now on the second place close to the team from Politecnico MI, the Meravigli16. They made a really good performance of 14.8 %, and are now on the first place of the ranking. The third place is still kept by a German team but not by the gPs from Hs Augsburg ZSI anymore. The Supermartingales from TU Muenchen made 50.14 % only within one week, and went from the 5th place up to the third one. So the competition among the first teams is really really tight.

In addition, there were some interesting changes behind the leading teams. The Swedish team Turnoak Trading from Lund University made a great 55.2 %, and rushed from the 16th on the 4th place of the ranking. Also the team from Lille 1, The Invisible Hand, came back from place 21 on the 7th place and made 37.44 %. The team from Universidad San Pablo CEU, CEU Trading, did also make a great job, and almost doubled their performance from 25.58 % to 50.68 %, and are still on the 6th place.

Until the end of the University Trading Challenge in May, there is still plenty of time left for trading. At the moment, the competition is really tight. 30 teams do have a positive performance and 54 teams do have a negative one. Seven teams are inactive and already 20 teams are out of the game, because they faced a loss greater than 40 %.

Due to the fact that the teams are really close together we will have a closer look on their trades which made during the last week. Have great week and good luck with your trades!

Jetzt wieder unter den Top 10! Weiter so "The gPs"!

We wish you all a happy New Year and good luck with your trading and investments.

The Supermartingales are first again with 29.10 % but what happened during the turn of the year?

Apparently, the German team The Supermartingales from TU Muenchen was staying idle and was watching the markets, whereas the French team The Invisible Hand from Lille 1 has made some minor mistakes in the meantime. With 6.65 % the team is on the 10th place now. But remember that the team made 42.01 % within one week so we can be sure that they´ll come back.

What else happened? The German team from the RWTH Aachen Die Vier Lustigen Drei was on the third place in the last ranking but is now out of the game! Maybe they took too much risk. The Meravigli16 from Politecnico MI are now on the second place with 19.31 % which is an increase of 10.18 % compared to the last ranking were it was on the ninth place. On the third place, LUISS Blue Team from LUISS RM made 9.92 % and went up from place ten.

Have a good week and successful trades

+++ The Invisible Hand takes over the lead +++

Last week ranked on the 8th place with slightly over 4%, the team from Université Lille 1, France, took over the lead from The Supermartingales, with a stunning performance of 46.16%.

Thus the team from TU München is now forced to give up their wait-and-see strategy and pursue the team which stole them the lead in the last week of the year. With a performance of 29.10% they are now ranked on the second place.

Also new on the podium, Die Vier Lustigen Drei from RWTH Aachen could take the third position from last week's number three Naktien Club, now come 6th with a marginal performance improvement.

You can see from the ranking, that we had a surprisingly interesting and intensive last week of the year 2013 in trading and that the students used their Christmas holidays use- and gainful ;).

We wish you all a good start in the new year of 2014! Success, perseverance, satisfaction as well as a knack for the right decisions coming up in 2014 :).

Moreover we would like you to enjoy the interview we've conducted with the last week's leading team THE SUPERMARTINGALES in persona of Steffen Schenk, German Bernhart, Mirco Mahlstedt and Thorsten Schulz.

UTC: How much experience in trading does your team have? Where does that experience come from?

TS: Trading experience strongly differs within the team. Some of us have traded in their own behalf before, while others have desperately – nowadays increasingly unsuccessfully -- struggled with inflation by leaving their money on an instant access savings account. What unifies us is the limited extent to which we have come across exotic derivatives so far. Thus, we are really looking forward to getting to know the mechanics and pitfalls of the non-standard products tradable in this competition.

UTC: What strategy do you apply? Would be really interesting to give some hints (common stocks, derivatives etc.) because you´ve started trading and have rushed to the first place. Is it more based on a fundamental or a technical approach? (You don´t have to discover all the details ;).)

TS: With the uncertainty about US American tapering inception impacting the markets significantly for the last couple of months, it is no surprise that one is able to achieve huge returns when anticipating large drops or enthusiastic upward jumps timely. Given that we were investing while the market fell for the first time after an exceptional upward movement lasting several weeks, and given that we expected market uncertainty to increase with the tapering decision to come closer, it should be obvious how we tried to exploit those market conditions. In a nutshell: Combining volatility with a pinch of coin flipping seems to be a useful recipe. However, with our time being limited and some of our members completing an internship on the side, we are not able to trade as often as we want to.

UTC: Do you have a specified goal or quantitative one for the University Trading Challenge? So for example 50 % of performance or anything else like that?

TS: No, we simply think from trading day to trading day and try to permanently do our best. We’re not persuading ourselves of gaining 50% as if out of the blue, but are rather very aware of both the strength of the other teams and the unpredictability of the moody markets. In addition to that, we are not solely aiming at performance, but are convinced that keeping volatility in mind as well is a key success factor in both the Directa Trading Challenge and institutional investing.

UTC: Do you have a special intension for using the prize money if you would win the University Trading Challenge?

TS: There is still a very long way to go and we haven’t spent one single thought on the very vague possibility of finishing first. We deeply thank Directa for providing us with the opportunity to participate in this exciting competition, yet are happy for any team that accomplishes to succeed.

UTC: Thank you for answering the questions and good luck with your trading activities.

+++ Ho Ho Ho!!! The Supermartingales still lead the university trading challenge and take advantage of their comfortable and commanding position +++

Since three weeks The Supermartingales from TU München dominate the University Trading Challenge with a performance of 29.10%. While the LUISS Blue Team from Rome fought their way back to the second place, coming from the 4th, they now show an alpha of 11.79% instead of slightly over 9% last week.

With the Naktien Club from FH NORDAKADEMIE, this week there is a second German team on the podium. After using their market knowledge wisely, last week's place No. 5 is now ranked third with 11.04%.

But what happened with last week's number 2 and 3? Last week's number two, the Panta Rei from ESCP Europe London Campus, are not even in the Top 15 this week. Losing more than 17% within a week they are now ranked 35th.

Even more dramatic the IG Boerse Dresden from TU Dresden lost more than 24% within a week. Last week's number three seemes to have some leverage issues here. Plunged onto the 52nd place, it appears that they chose the wrong strategy for last week's market course.

However it is great to see that the top 15 of the field are, more or less, closely spaced even though there are more teams in a negative balance at the moment.

We hope you will keep on trading during your winter break. For the upcoming Christmas holidays we wishl you all the best and blessed days with your families.

Schauen wir mal, wie sich die Teams der Hochschule Augsburg diese Jahr schlagen :) ?!

+++The Supermartingales from TU München assure their formidable position and let the other teams battle the consolidating markets+++

Still leading the competition with 29.10% the Supermartingales from Munich maintain their position within the ranking. Even though they did not trade for a week, it's a good strategy to watch the market and let the others come, speculating on mistakes.

Almost the same strategy can be seen by the team of the ESCP Europe London Campus, still defending their second place with 15.65%.

New on the podium, the IG Boerse Dresden belonging to the TU Dresden, reached the third place. By outperforming the LUISS Blue Team from LUISS Business School, they are now present a performance of 12.47% chasing the top two.

With 63 active teams, 19 teams which will start trading in the upcoming weeks, already 2 disqualified teams and some pending teams still sticking in the registration the University Trading Challenge starts to accelerate to the end of this year.

We are curious about the upcoming weeks and the performance the teams will show. Until then, we wish pleasant days
