Call for Contributors: „Africa In Context“ Podcast Series

The Chair of African Legal Studies at the University of Bayreuth invites expressions of interest for its upcoming podcast series, hosted by Prof. Dr. Thoko Kaime. Running from June to November 2026, „Africa In Context“ bridges academic scholarship with the societal, cultural, and economic realities of contemporary Africa, countering traditional Eurocentric frameworks.

Call for Contributors: „Africa In Context“ Podcast Series

The Chair of African Legal Studies is pleased to announce a call for contributors for its upcoming podcast series, hosted by Prof. Dr. Thoko Kaime. Running from June to November 2026, „Africa In Context“ seeks to bridge epistemic gaps by bringing academic scholarship into direct conversation with the societal, cultural, and economic realities of contemporary Africa.

We are currently inviting expressions of interest from expert lawyers, academics, artists, and practitioners well-versed in these thematic areas.

Key Information:
• Timeline: Recording sessions will commence this July; this call remains open for a two-week period.
• Logistics: In-person recording takes place at the University of Bayreuth, with a travel stipend of approximately €25 allocated per interviewee.
• Availability: Due to a condensed seven-episode production schedule, available guest slots are strictly limited.
• Applications & Nominations: To apply or nominate an expert, please submit a brief profile via direct message or email to [email protected].

Visitor Spotlight: Janet Jebichii Sego

We are pleased to share a recap of our recent guest, Janet Jebichii Sego. An Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and FWO PhD Fellow at the University of Antwerp, Janet recently concluded an impactful research stay at the Chair of African Legal Studies. During her time with us, she advanced her paper on bilateral DFIs as human rights duty bearers, engaged in our „Human Rights in Africa“ course, and presented her work for valuable feedback at the PhD Focus Day. Her stay beautifully strengthened her research and expanded her academic network with fellow scholars.

The Chair of African Legal Studies at the University of Bayreuth is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position (75%, TV-L E13) beginning October 1, 2026, and ending December 31, 2027.

Are you passionate about public international law, human rights, and African legal systems? Would you like to pursue your independent research agenda while actively contributing to teaching, conferences, and international partnerships within a highly dynamic and supportive academic team? Then this position might be for you.

We operate in an internationally active and interdisciplinary research environment. Visitor Spotlight: Dr. Williams Iheme

We are pleased to announce the upcoming arrival of Dr. Williams Iheme. A Full Professor of Law and cosmopolitan scholar, Dr. Iheme will begin a one-year research stay at the Chair of African Legal Studies starting June 1, 2026. During his time with us, he will engage in roundtable discussions, deliver guest lectures, advance his comparative research, and mentor PhD candidates and early-career researchers. Welcome, Dr. Iheme!

The Walters Nsoh Annual Bowling Event

As part the International Environmental and Sustainable Development Law course in Summer Semester, the Chair of hosted its annual Walters Nsoh Bowling event in honour of Prof. Dr. Walters Nsoh, the visiting professor for the course.

Job Opportunity at the University of Bayreuth: Student Assistant (SHK) wanted at BIGSAS!

The Bayreuth International Graduate School for African Studies (BIGSAS) is currently seeking a motivated student assistant to support the international doctoral candidates and administrative team as soon as possible.

This is a fantastic opportunity to gain insight into graduate school administration, international academic networks, and event management.

- Position: Student Assistant (SHK)
- Workload: 20 hours per month
- Location: On-campus (FZA), University of Bayreuth

Core Responsibilities:
- Supporting (international) doctoral students and guests.
- Assisting with secretariat tasks, database management, and statistics.
- Contributing to public relations, website maintenance, and social media management.
- Helping organize events, workshops, and E-learning courses.

What we are looking for:
- An enrolled student (for at least two more semesters; field of study is open, though a connection to African Studies is a plus).
- Strong command of both German and English (written and spoken). Additional language skills, especially French, are highly welcome.
- Excellent organizational skills and proficiency in MS Office.

Visitor Spotlight: Dr. Walters Nsoh & Dr. Synda Obaji

We are delighted to welcome Walters Nsoh and Synda Obaji to the Chair of African Legal Studies.

Birmingham-based Associate Professor Walters Nsoh will once again facilitate the block course International Environmental and Sustainable Development Law, while Assistant Professor Dr. Synda Obaji will join us for the first weekend of the programme.

We are very pleased to host Dr. Nsoh again and look forward to the exchange with both outstanding colleagues. And, of course, we are especially excited for the annual Walters Nsoh Invitational Bowling Cup next week. Stay tuned!
