💪Team English Linguistics in Action 💪

From March 23-25, Markus Bieswanger attended the 40th anniversary edition of the Flyoperativt Forum (Flight Operational Forum Norway) and gave a plenary speech on “Communication and Language Factors in Air Safety Investigations”.
He very much welcomed the opportunity to spread the message to aviation industry experts from all over Scandinavia and beyond that communication and language do affect flight safety and have to be systematically included in incident and accident investigations.

More information on the forum can be found at: https://fof.aero/agenda-2026/

💪Team English Linguistics in Action 💪

From 26–28 March, Susanne Mühleisen from Team English Linguistics attended “Digital P(a)lates: The Language of Online Food Practices” at FU Berlin. The conference was organized by our former colleague Sofia Rüdiger together with her team, Rita Vallentin and Ryan Fountain.

Sixty participants from thirteen different countries (Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Singapore, Taiwan, the UK, and the US) made their way to Berlin to engage in conversations and discussions centered around language and food.
The flavorful program featured two workshops (by Zeena Feldman and Janina Wildfeuer), a practitioner talk (by Marina Beuerle), four keynote lectures (by Cynthia Gordon, Stefan Diemer, Cornelia Gerhardt, and Keri Marwick), and more than thirty presentations and lightning talks. It really was a wonderful opportunity for bringing together scholars from across the field, from emerging voices to renowned experts.

A heartfelt thank you to Sofia and her team for organizing this wonderful conference! It truly was a deliciously enjoyable event, offering a rich menu of contributions and discussions. ☺️🍽️

💪Team English Linguistics in Action 💪

Patricia Maier from Team English Linguistics attended the 23rd StaPs conference (Sprachwissenschaftliche Tagung für Promotionsstudierende) at Osnabrück University from 13-14 March. In her talk “Environmental female voices: A pragmatic discourse analysis of speeches by women leaders in climate activism” she presented the framework of her PhD-project.

On two days, StaPs brought together linguistics PhD students from different countries and fields to discuss their ongoing research. The conference was also lightened up by incredibly interesting plenary talks by Nathalie Bauer (University of Münster) and Alexander Bergs (Osnabrück University), as well as two practical workshops organized by Elen Le Foll (University of Cologne).

A big thank you to the linguistics department at Osnabrück University for organizing the conference! It was a pleasure to be there and a great chance to get to know so many people and their projects!😊
