The “Africa Multiple” Cluster of Excellence - Reconfiguring African Studies

Major funding success for the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence! 🌍✨

We are proud to welcome Prof. Dr. Salome A. Bukachi as a Mercator Fellow Global through the DFG’s Global Minds initiative.

With approximately €550,000 in funding, Prof. Bukachi will collaborate closely with our Cluster over a multi-year period (2027–2031), spending a total of 32 months conducting research with colleagues here at the University of Bayreuth.

🩺 About the Research:

Working at the intersection of medical anthropology and the One Health framework, her project investigates how local knowledge in Kenya (Kajiado) and Uganda (Nakaseke) can strengthen early detection systems for zoonotic diseases. The research explores how daily interactions with animals, social structures, and gender roles shape community early warnings.

🌿 Connecting Disciplines:

Her fellowship creates key synergies with our Ecologies Research Section, bridging African Studies and the humanities with health sciences and global food policy.

Welcoming the 2026/27 Fellowship Cohort to Bayreuth! 🌍✨

Following the launch of Africa Multiple 2.0, the Fellowship Programme at the Bayreuth Academy of Advanced African Studies is moving ahead at full speed. Over the 2026/27 academic year, 21 scholars and artists will join the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence, bringing diverse disciplinary perspectives and creative practices to our central research agenda: world-making from the vantage point of Africa.

NAB Spotlight: Taking the Unknown Seriously

In this feature, Joschka Philipps and Kingsley Jima reflect on recent work and activities of the Junior Research Group “Politics of the Unknown: Conspiracism and Conflict.” Combining social-science research with artistic approaches, the group explores how rumours, uncertainty, and perceptions of truth interact with political conflict, while recognising that some questions and projects remain open and ongoing.

African Studies Centres: Infrastructures, Networks, Research and Outreach

On 10–11 September 2026, the Centre of African Studies (CEA) at Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo hosted a workshop co-convened with the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence and the University of Bayreuth.

The meeting created a space for African Studies centres from Africa, Europe, Latin America, and Asia to exchange experiences and explore future cooperation. Discussions considered the development of these institutions, their role in shaping the field, and ways to strengthen research networks, knowledge co-creation, mentorship, and engagement with society.

Participating institutions included CEA Maputo; the Africa Multiple Research Centres at Moi University, Rhodes University, Université Joseph Ki-Zerbo, and the University of Lagos; Les Afriques dans le Monde in Bordeaux; CEAO at the Federal University of Bahia; African and Caribbean Studies at the University of Costa Rica; the Institute of African Studies and Diaspora Studies in New Delhi; the Institute of African Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies; African Studies at Université Mohammed V; the Africa Multiple Cluster in Bayreuth; and the International Institute for Asian Studies in Leiden.

Countdown to the Factory of Ideas 2026: Just 2 days left! 🗓️

This Monday, September 14, the Fabrica de Ideas / Factory of Ideas Doctoral School officially commences under the theme "Worldmaking at the Digital Threshold: Media, Memory, and Cultural Futures in Times of (De)globalization."

Hosted by the Moi University Africa Multiple Research Centre in Kenya, in close partnership with Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA) and the University of Bayreuth. This program unites 40 emerging scholars from Africa, Latin America, and Europe for critical dialogue across disciplinary and geographical boundaries.

New Publication: Afrotopies et afrodystopies

Edited by Sylvère Mbondobari, Ute Fendler, and Laude Ngadi Maïssa, this collective volume approaches afrotopia and afrodystopia as two faces of the same conception of African futures, placing intellectual debates on Afrofuturism of both Afro-American and African inspiration at its centre through philosophical (J. G. Bidima), socio-anthropological (J. Tonda), and literary reflections.

Francophone and Anglophone voices, as well as work in African national languages, are at the heart of the volume, which interrogates the writing of a prospective Africa. The contributors analyse artistic, literary, and audiovisual expressions from Africa and its diasporas, giving full space to African philosophical thought, including thinkers such as Euphrase Kezilahabi and William Mkufya, who remain too little known and discussed in Europe.

With contributions by Francesca Aiuti, Markus Arnold, Jean Godefroy Bidima, Mélissa Buecher-Nelson, Kasongo M. Kapanga, Pierre Dominique Nzinzi, Wesner B. Obolo, Michał Obszyński, Alena Rettová, Mathieu Smith-Perrot, and Joseph Tonda.

NAB Spotlight | Phyo Kay Kine: New Academic Coordinator

Dr Phyo Kay Kine has joined the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS) as Academic Coordinator, bringing an academic journey that spans Myanmar, Germany, and China.

Trained in physics, tropical forestry, and biogeography, she previously led externally funded projects and supervised postgraduate students at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In her new role, she looks forward to guiding doctoral researchers through their academic paths, fostering interdisciplinary exchange, and contributing to the global visibility of BIGSAS, guided by her motto: "Bridging disciplines, cultures, and ideas to grow knowledge that serves communities."

Model African Union Bayreuth e.V. Elections

The student association Model African Union Bayreuth e.V. will hold its annual elections on 8 September 2026 and is calling on students to put themselves forward.

The elections are an opportunity to take an active role in the MAU community, develop leadership and diplomatic skills, and help shape the direction of the organisation. Founded in Bayreuth and the first of its kind in Germany, MAU is a student-run association that hosts an annual conference simulating the African Union.
