Join us for a conversation with economic geographer and urban scholar Andrea Pollio from the University of Torino. Pollio will discuss his new book, Silicon Elsewhere (2026), an insightful examination of Nairobi, Kenya’s “Silicon Savannah,” where venture capitalists, data scientists, entrepreneurs, and state bureaucrats mingle with networks of Chinese startups and investment to shape Nairobi’s technological future. Drawing on urban studies, geography, and African studies, Silicon Elsewhere is a compelling analysis of technological innovation in an urban East African city. The talk will be followed by a discussion and audience Q&A. All are welcome.

Date: 1 July 2026
Time: 14:00-16:00
Venue: 1st Floor Lounge, Forschungszentrum Afrikas (FZA)

It was a hot day on Friday as we joined the "Africa Day" as part of the Uni Bayreuth’s Summer Feeling 2026 on campus! ☀️🌍

Together with Bigsas Bayreuth , , and MAU Bayreuth Conference , we shared information about the Cluster and connected with many curious visitors. To spark conversations, we invited passers-by to take part in a simple and engaging map quiz, challenging them to locate countries on the African continent.

Despite the summer heat, we enjoyed many inspiring conversations and were delighted by the strong interest in our work. Thank you to everyone who stopped by!

Hot of the Press: L’Atlantique Noir revisité - Espaces relationnels et « (in)visibles » de la mémoire

From Gorée to Salvador de Bahia, from Ouidah to Cartagena, this new interdisciplinary volume revisits the Black Atlantic as a relational space where history, art, and lived experience converge.

The collection brings together scholars, artists and thinkers from Africa, Europe and Latin America to explore how traces of slavery and the transatlantic trade are reinscribed in bodies, landscapes and contemporary imaginaries, between visibility and erasure, institutional memory and lived memory.

With contributions by Babacar Mbaye Diop, Livio Sansone, Ute Fendler, Aliou Ndiaye, Samba Doucouré, Thierry Boudjekeu, Raul Mendes Fernandes, Eberhard Rothfuß, Malick Diagne, Tafsir Baba Ndao Diouf, Sylvestre Edjêkpoto, Fodé Abulai Mané, Gilbert Shang Ndi and Valerie V. V. Gruber.
