Kimi Onoda is one of the most powerful women in Japan's government — and she describes herself as "2D exclusive."

That means the 43-year-old minister of state for economic security only forms romantic attachments with animated characters.

Onoda has said human romance is "uncomfortable" and that her affection for "2D men" leaves her no time for it anyway.

She's complained about being pressured to marry an actual man since her 20s — and compared that pressure to discrimination.

Here's the twist: part of her job is revitalizing Japan's economy, in a country whose birthrate is falling so fast some fear the Japanese people could eventually disappear.

She used to work for a video game company and belongs to the Parliamentarians' League for Japan's Anime, Manga and Games.

And she's far from alone — surveys show 17% of young Japanese women report romantic feelings for a fictional character.

There are even agencies that stage full wedding ceremonies with virtual partners.

About the film:
Home, Elsewhere follows Karan, a Gen Z migrant from India navigating his life in Berlin. What begins as a chance encounter with the filmmaker—an anthropologist who left India 20 years ago—evolves into a four-year long-term observation of Karan’s migrant life in transition. From the structured world of a student fraternity to a more fluid, international university life, Karan’s journey unfolds alongside other young migrants shaping their own paths. The film reflects on distance, belonging, and the shifting meaning of home through moments of cooking, celebrations, and conversations. The film quietly observes a generational continuity, interwoven with the filmmaker’s own migration story nearly two decades after she left India, concluding between love for home and the realities that continue to push its youth to leave.

Megha Wadhwa, Ph.D. is a filmmaker, anthropologist, and author based in Japan, where she works as an Assistant Professor at Sophia University.

Am 18. Mai 2026 findet am JDZB eine internationale Politikkonferenz zum Thema “Japan-Europe-U.S. Relations in Turbulent Times” statt, an der führende Japan- und Indo-Pazifik-Expertinnen und -Experten aus Europa und den Vereinigten Staaten teilnehmen und I.E. Mitsuko Shino, Botschafterin von Japan (Botschaft von Japan in Deutschland), eine Keynote-Rede halten wird.
Organisiert wird die Veranstaltung von der Indiana University, 21st Century Japan Politics and Society Initiative, unterstützt wird sie von IU Global, IU Europe Gateway in Berlin sowie der Freie Universität Berlin und dem JDZB.

Das neue Institut: Arnimallee 10, wir sind umgezogen und fühlen uns im neuen Gebäude sehr wohl. Es wird noch eine Weile dauern, bis alle Kisten ausgepackt sind und alles funktioniert, aber es ist ein sehr schönes Haus. Bald mehr aus dem Inneren, sobald das Auspacken vorüber ist.

Goodbye Hittorfstrasse! Nach 14 Jahren zieht das Institut für Japanologie aus der Hittorfstrasse aus. Die letzten Wochen waren für alle sehr viel Arbeit, das Einpacken und Aussortieren hat viele Erinnerungen geweckt. Schön ist, dass auch die Graduate School of East Asian Studies umgezogen ist und nahe bei uns bleibt - gleich auf der anderen Straßenseite. Bilder vom neuen Gebäude folgen!
