On June 6 from 5pm until midnight, GBZ Masters students present Playground or Battleground? Childhood in Conflict: London, Berlin, and Belfast in HU's Senatssaal as part of this year's Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften. Alongside this interdisciplinary research-based exhibition, there will be activities for children, interactive stations and games, a food table, historical toys provided by Onkel Philipps’ Spielzeugwerkstatt, and a reading corner.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a panel discussion with Juliane Röleke and Dr Tom Koltermann of the Leibniz Centre for Contemporary History, Potsdam at 7pm titled ‘Childhood in Divided Berlin and the Troubles.’ An exhibition tour in English will start at 8.30pm, in German at 9pm, and in Turkish at 9.30pm. A film produced by the Centre’s students—comprised primarily of
archival footage and photographs of children during The Blitz, divided Berlin, and the Troubles—will be screened at 10pm. Information on the charitable work, and an opportunity to donate, to War Child Deutschland will also be available.

Join us in Berlin (and online) for the international conference Evolving Relationships – Ireland, the UK and beyond on May 11th and 12th. 🇮🇪🇬🇧🌍

Hosted by Humboldt Universität Berlin’s The Centre for British Studies in partnership with the University of Limerick and Ulster University, this two day interdiciplinary conference brings together leading experts to explore the evolving political, economic, social, literary, artistic, and cultural relationships between Ireland, the UK, and beyond.

On Thursday 9 April at 6.30pm, we welcome Oxford English Literature Professor Kate McLoughlin as she launches her book Silence: A Literary History.

McLoughlin's talk kicks off the exhibition Silences/Stille/Schweigen. Based upon its curators’, Dr Christina Kuhli (HU art collection) and Prof Gesa Stedman (GBZ), previous collaborations with McLoughlin, it features works from HU's art collection, and those of contemporary British and Berlin-based artists, including Tom Hammick (GB) and Sylee Gore (Berlin).

The programme is rounded out with an art workshop and a creative writing workshop at 11am on Saturday, 11 April.

All are welcome, but access is via the Charité museum which is recommended for people aged 16 or older. Exhibition times: 10 - 12 April 2026 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday & Sunday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Based on previous collaborations with Prof Kate McLoughlin, Dr Christina Kuhli (HU art collection) and Prof Gesa Stedman (GBZ) have co-curated an exhibition on silence/Stille/Schweigen, featuring works from HU's art collection, and contemporary British and Berlin-based artists, including Tom Hammick (GB) and Sylee Gore (Berlin).
