Bard College Berlin is a private liberal arts university in Berlin, Germany offering four-year B.A. degrees and one-year programs in English. degree.

Bard College Berlin was founded in 1999 as the European College of Liberal Arts (ECLA). In 2011, thanks in large part to a decade of generous support by the Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation, the college received accreditation as a German university, with the right to award a German B.A. In 2011, ECLA merged with Bard College, a leading American liberal arts college which has its main campus in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. Founded in 1860, Bard College is an independent, nonsectarian, residential, coeducational college offering B.A. degrees in nearly 50 academic programs in four divisions. Bard College Berlin is a German non-profit organization (gGmbH) and a state-recognized university. The College is accredited in Germany by the Berlin Senate and in the United States by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE).

Ahead of the U.S. midterm elections, political scientist Lilliana Mason of Johns Hopkins University visited the Heinrich Böll Foundation in Berlin to speak about political polarization and identity. 🗳️

In conversation with Joshua Yaffa, journalist for The New Yorker and BCB Writer-in-Residence, she discussed how class, gender, race, age, and geography shape political allegiances, and what this means for democracies in the U.S. and Europe.

BCB students had a chance to attend this lecture as part of the “Writing Democracy" event series with the Heinrich Böll Foundation.

Novelist Matthias Nawrat recently visited Dr. Martin Widmann’s new Historical Fiction seminar for a conversation about his work. Nawrat is the recipient of this year’s prestigious Berliner Literaturpreis, among other accolades. 📚

In an intimate and lively exchange with the students, Nawrat spoke about the composition of his recent historical novel 'Das glückliche Schicksal,' his poetics, and his understanding of the novelist’s task when working with historical material, as compared to contemporary topics. He also discussed his own work in translation, notably his 2019 novel 'The Sad Guest' (Der traurige Gast) from which students had read an excerpt.

The 1951 Geneva Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees has turned 75 years old this year, often designated as the “Magna Carta of refugee protection.” 📜 Roland Bank, head of the protection work of UNHCR in Germany, recently delivered a guest lecture at Bard College Berlin discussing the pressure the Convention has faced in recent years as violations of European and international refugee law seem to have become more acceptable.

Bank's talk asked students and audience members to consider the question, "Is the Convention still relevant, or is it outdated and in need of revision?" ⚖️

The secret is out—now you can apply to college in 1 day! Bard College Berlin's Immediate Decision Plan (IDP) is an in-person application process that allows students to receive their college admission decision one business day after attending an event in their region.

IDP will take place in Los Angeles County on November 7 and in Brooklyn, New York on November 14. Submit your Early Action application and register by November 1 to take part.

Bard College Berlin has SO many great opportunities for students to advocate in our community. 📣 We recently went behind-the-scenes at the Race Against Racism in Mauerpark, organized by BCB students in collaboration with the Civic Engagement Office. 🏃‍♀️
Participants engaged in a 4 hour run and enjoyed other activities like yoga, cultural dances, and more!

What are BCB alumni up to? 🎬

Recently, BCB alumna Anđela Despotović returned to campus with a screening of “Handyhotel,” a short film she produced with director Anastasia Veber and students from the Berlin high school where she now teaches.

Afterward, Anđela, Anastasia, and the student actors participated in a Q&A, sharing their experiences of the challenges migrants face in the Berlin education system.

The screening was organized by the German Studies Program, the discussion was moderated by Andreas Martin Widmann, and Ariane Friedländer took part in the panel discussion.

Prof. Dr. Agata Lisiak's “Migration, Space, and Power” course invites students to radically rethink migration with the help of two exceptional scholars, teachers, and activists: Rosa Luxemburg and Doreen Massey.
During a class excursion, students visited the site of the former women's prison in Barnimstrasse to gather leaves for a herbarium inspired by Rosa Luxemburg's botanical notebooks kept in prison.🍂

BCB is taking over Mauerpark with the Race Against Racism! 🏃🎉

Together, students, the BCB Civic Engagement team, and Freunde des Mauerparks e.V. led a demonstration in the park to challenge racism, discrimination, and exclusion.
Alongside the relay race, students organized performances and engaged with the local community to discuss their perspectives on diversity, inclusion, and equal participation.
