Interdisciplinary research/teaching center of social sciences and humanities at Bielefeld University Think the Americas in a different way! The M.A.

program Inter-American Studies/ Estudios Inter-Americanos delves into the social, cultural, and political developments in the Americas, from an interdisciplinary perspective that encompasses Literary and Media Studies, Linguistics, Sociology, Political Science and History. The focus lies on exploring the processes of exchange and intertwining that have taken place between the continent’s multiple

regions as well as within its national territories. The courses are taught in English and Spanish. Students also have the opportunity to attend a semester abroad at one of our partner universities in the Americas, as well as a double degree option in cooperation with the Universidad de Guadalajara in Mexico. Due to the strong focus on the development of intercultural and communicative skills, graduates may pursue a career in international organizations, public relations, communications agencies, or academic institutions.

The Center for InterAmerican Studies at Bielefeld University warmly invites you to our next colloquium session featuring María Herrera Cardenas (Bielefeld University).

🎤 Talk:
Affective Distress and the Politics of Legibility: Gender, Medicalization, and Care in Europe and Mexico

María Herrera Cardenas is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Bielefeld University specializing in Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG). Her research contributes to developing gendered medical violence as an analytical category to examine how institutional medical practices produce harm and how contemporary literature generates epistemic repair and feminist counter-knowledge.

In this talk, she will explore the intersections of gender, medicalization, care, and affective distress across European and Mexican contexts, offering critical perspectives on how experiences of suffering become socially and institutionally legible.

We welcome students, researchers, faculty members, and all interested guests to join us for what promises to be a stimulating discussion.

Join us for an evening of music, visual art, and historical rediscovery at a special piano concert with video projection dedicated to the extraordinary composer F***y Hensel-Mendelssohn.

Internationally acclaimed Mexican pianist Monique Rasetti will present an informed and expressive interpretation of Hensel-Mendelssohn’s music, drawing from archival research and the study of period instruments. Through music, poetry, and visual arts, this concert seeks to bring renewed attention to the pianistic legacy of a composer whose work was long marginalized due to gender bias.

📢 The InterAmerican Studies Colloquium – Summer Term 2026 begins!

We are excited to announce the start of this semester’s CIAS InterAmerican Studies Colloquium at Bielefeld University.

The program brings together international scholars, artists, and researchers to engage with key debates across the Americas—from environmental change and the Anthropocene to indigenous movements, gender and care, cultural production, and democratic futures. The colloquium also includes artistic formats, interdisciplinary exchanges, and a dedicated MA Thesis Lab for students.

Throughout the semester, the series fosters critical dialogue on social, political, and cultural transformations in the Americas, combining perspectives from the humanities and social sciences with artistic and practice-oriented approaches.

📢 Convocatoria | CALAS–HIAS Research Fellowship 2027

El Centro Maria Sibylla Merian de Estudios Latinoamericanos Avanzados (CALAS) y el Hamburg Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS) invitan a investigadores a postular a la beca de investigación CALAS–HIAS 2027.

La convocatoria está dirigida a académicos posdoctorales, así como a artistas y profesionales de la cultura de América Latina y el Caribe, con proyectos que aborden los cambios geopolíticos radicales y las transformaciones regionales en América Latina.

Las personas seleccionadas realizarán una estancia de seis meses en Alemania:
📍 4 meses en HIAS (Hamburgo)
📍 2 meses en la Universidad de Bielefeld (CALAS/CIAS)

La beca promueve investigaciones interdisciplinarias sobre los actuales procesos de transformación en la región, incluyendo dinámicas geopolíticas, migración, populismo, crisis ambientales y nuevas visiones de cooperación y futuro en América Latina.
