Interdisciplinary research/teaching center of social sciences and humanities at Bielefeld University Think the Americas in a different way! The M.A.

program Inter-American Studies/ Estudios Inter-Americanos delves into the social, cultural, and political developments in the Americas, from an interdisciplinary perspective that encompasses Literary and Media Studies, Linguistics, Sociology, Political Science and History. The focus lies on exploring the processes of exchange and intertwining that have taken place between the continent’s multiple regions as well as within its national territories. The courses are taught in English and Spanish. Students also have the opportunity to attend a semester abroad at one of our partner universities in the Americas, as well as a double degree option in cooperation with the Universidad de Guadalajara in Mexico. Due to the strong focus on the development of intercultural and communicative skills, graduates may pursue a career in international organizations, public relations, communications agencies, or academic institutions.

Join us for **Shifting Worlds: InterAmerican (Dis)Entanglements**, an international conference bringing together scholars to explore these questions and examine the complex connections, tensions, and transformations shaping the InterAmerican world.

As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary, what is the current state of democracy and human rights?

CIAS, Focus Area SHIFT, and ASTA are pleased to invite you to the next edition of the InterAmerican Studies Colloquium, featuring a keynote address by Professor Kwame Dixon (Howard University, Washington, D.C.).

In this timely lecture, Professor Dixon will examine the challenges facing democratic institutions and human rights in the United States and across the Americas. The discussion will explore voting and minority rights, grassroots resistance, civil society mobilization, the upcoming U.S. midterm elections, and the broader implications of U.S. foreign policy, including recent military interventions in the Middle East and Latin America.

Together, we will consider questions such as:
• What is the current state of democracy in the United States?
• How are social movements shaping the struggle for human rights?
• What role does the U.S. play in promoting—or challenging—democratic values at home and abroad?

Join us for an engaging discussion on some of the most pressing political and social issues of our time.

La impronta cultural latinoamericana en Alemania es cada vez más notable. Solamente en Berlín, el surgimiento de iniciativas como la librería Andenbuch, el ciclo de lecturas Probador de Poesías y el festival literario Barrio (Bairro) Berlín dejan en claro que hoy en día la literatura latinoamericana no es algo que se debe mirar solo a la distancia, sino que está también está sucediendo en Europa.

L-s invitamos a escuchar el conversatorio entre la poeta venezolana y organizadora de Probador de Poesías Regina Riveros y el poeta colombiano y co-curador de Barrio Berlín Daniel Sarmiento en torno a la nueva escena literaria latinoamericana en Berlín. Además de intercambiar experiencias e impresiones en torno a este tema, el evento termina con la lectura de algunos textos selectos producto de este nuevo canon diaspórico.

The event features a conversation with Rita Laura Segato and the translators, a commentary by Heidemarie Winkel (Bielefeld University), and moderation by Ana Miranda Mora (Utrecht University).

Affective Distress and the Politics of Legibility: Gender, Medicalization, and Care in Europe and Mexico

María Herrera Cardenas is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Bielefeld University specializing in Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG). Her research contributes to developing gendered medical violence as an analytical category to examine how institutional medical practices produce harm and how contemporary literature generates epistemic repair and feminist counter-knowledge.

In this talk, she will explore the intersections of gender, medicalization, care, and affective distress across European and Mexican contexts, offering critical perspectives on how experiences of suffering become socially and institutionally legible.

We welcome students, researchers, faculty members, and all interested guests to join us for what promises to be a stimulating discussion.
