Wir sind Caroline Teschmer und Jan Rüggemeier – das Leitungstandem der transdisziplinären Forschungsstelle KONTRAST – Bildung in pluraler Gesellschaft an der Universität Bonn.

Mit unseren Perspektiven aus Religionspädagogik und Neuem Testament kommen wir aus der Theologie – denken aber bewusst über sie hinaus. Denn die Fragen einer pluralen Gesellschaft lassen sich weder in einer Disziplin noch in einer einzigen Sprache bearbeiten.

KONTRAST steht für Forschung, Bildung und Transfer, die Unterschiede nicht glattziehen. Für eine Streitkultur, in der Perspektiven aufeinanderprallen dürfen, Positionen begründet werden müssen und Widerspruch Erkenntnis schafft.

Kontrast als wissenschaftliches Prinzip.

When cognitive disciplines meet New Testament narrative 🧠📖

At the 80th General Meeting of the SNTS in Durham, our seminar Cognitive Disciplines and New Testament Narrative in Dialogue once again brought cognitive science, psychology, narrative theory, biblical studies, and early Christian literature into conversation.

Across three lively sessions, we explored the moral boundary zones of empathy and agape with Peter Lampe; the role of vision, mental imagery, and a sense of presence in ancient representations of heaven with Angela Kim Harkins and respondent Harry Maier; and the construction and contestation of biblical storyworlds between canon and apocrypha with Florian Graz and respondent Alan Kirk.

The papers showed how cognitive approaches can do more than add a new method to biblical interpretation: they can help us rethink how ancient narratives invite readers to perceive, imagine, feel, evaluate, and continually reshape their storyworlds.

Many thanks to our speakers, respondents, and everyone who contributed to the open and stimulating discussions!

After Durham, our seminar now enters its final year. Next stop: SNTS 2027 in Tübingen. We are already looking forward to new contributions, new perspectives, and another round of dialogue across disciplinary boundaries.

The SNTS in Durham is going very well – my search for a decent cappuccino rather less so….Even an unsolicited dusting of chocolate can only do so much ☕️🍫

Much better: a great start to my seminar with Elizabeth Shively, lots of lovely encounters with colleagues, and a truly historic moment: Adele Reinhartz as the first Jewish President of the SNTS, with a Presidential Address that was both brilliant and humorous.

As for the drinks, I will give up and move on to (Italian) beer.

At this year’s EABS Annual Conference in Leuven, we were delighted to launch our new Research Unit:

Exploring Ancient Jewish–Christian Narratives and Texts for Religious Education in a Pluralistic Present

Alongside a wide range of stimulating and inspiring papers, there was plenty of time for conversations, new connections, and exchange with colleagues from across disciplines and institutions.
