Congratulations to our class of #2023!🎉

Last Friday, on the 23rd of June, we said goodbye to our 25th class of the Master of European Studies Governance and Regulation with our Final Ceremony. We applaud all our graduates and wish them all the best for their future! We proudly acknowledge their academic achievements and look forward to seeing how their professional careers unfold.

It was a special anniversary that our ZEI Directors, Prof. Christian Koenig and Prof. Ludger Kühnhardt, celebrated with our guests. Prof. Michael Hoch, Minister Nathanael Liminski, and Mayor Dr. Ursula Sautter also honoured our students with their attendance. We kindly thank our dedicated ZEI Alumni for taking the time to travel to us from all over the world! We would also like to thank the Bernd Lier Swing Ensemble, which provided us with musical accompaniment at our graduation ceremonies for over 23 years.

This event was bittersweet, as it was also the last year of our Master's programme. Together with the retirement of Prof. Kühnhardt next year, the Master of European Studies will also come to an end. That is not to say, however, that the network we built and nurtured throughout the years will be lost. We are glad to announce that the Master's programme will be continued in spirit by a new programme at under Prof. Ulrich Schlie. Our international Alumni network, which has grown over the years and consists of more than 600 graduates from 125 countries, will continue to exist.

We would like to thank all those involved for a fantastic evening and the worthy conclusion of our heartfelt project!

On the 16th of March 2023, the European Commission published a Proposal for establishing a framework on ensuring a secure and sustainable supply of CRMs. CRMs are necessary in sectors like renewable energy, digital industry, space and defence as well as health, therefore, making them essential for EU strategic targets.

The sovereignty of each member state must be guarded even within the Union, meaning that a mechanism must be in place to ensure that the EU does not transgress its purpose. This sentiment exists in the principle of subsidiarity, which closely relates to the principle of proportionality. The latter requires that any action by the EU should not go beyond what is necessary to achieve the objectives of the Treaties.

The Pope's ambivalent relationship with the European continent fluctuates between the global orientation of the Roman Catholic Church and reservations about Western modernity. In our new Discussion Paper, ZEI Director Ludger Kühnhardt reconstructs the perspectives of seven popes during seven decades of European unity and the ongoing disunity of the European continent. It is available here:https://www.zei.uni-bonn.de/de/publikationen/medien/zei-dp/zei-dp-277-2023.pdf
