Don Feliciano es conocido por sus obras de teatro, novelas y poesía, entre las que se encuentran la novela “X-Marula” y el libro de poemas «Ukp'eel wayak». En el marco del proyecto europeo Lit-Future, realizabamos una entrevista con el poeta que será al fin parte de un podcast con poetas amerindias de México. Los temas centrales son medio ambiente, perspectivas al mundo, percepción de la ‘otredad’, pertenencia e identidad y sus expresiones en la lengua maya yucateca. En el imagen se ve el poeta maya yucateca en conversación con Antje Gunsenheimer al 19 de septiembre de 2026 en su milpa, cerca del pueblo Xaya, en el centro de la península de Yucatán.

Después de que José Alberto visitara el departamento en Bonn en noviembre de 2025, ahora (18 de septiembre de 2026) pudimos visitarlo en la casa de sus padres en Tihosuco (Quintana Roo, México), conocer a su familia y recorrer su taller. Para que nuestro viaje transcurriera de manera segura y exitosa, primero se llevó a cabo un ritual de bienvenida en la cueva debajo de la casa, su «chulultun», como dijo José Alberto. La cueva, posiblemente un baño de v***r, formaba parte de la construcción anterior a la casa, que probablemente fue destruida durante la Guerra de Kasten. Nachdem José Alberto die Abteilung im November 2025 Bonn besucht hatte, konnten wir ihm jetzt (18.09.2026) einen Besuch in seinem Elternhaus in Tihosuco (Quintana Roo, Mexiko) abstatten, seine Familie kennen lernen und seine Werkstatt besichtigen. Damit unsere Reise sicher und erfolgreich verläuft, wurde mit uns zunächst ein Begrüßungsritual in der Höhle unter dem Haus durchgeführt, seinem chulultun, wie José Alberto sagte. Die Höhle, evtl. ein Schwitzbad, gehörte zu dem Vorgängerbau des Hauses, welches wohl im Kastenkrieg zerstört worden war. 🌴Animacy in Waiwai Demonstratives🌴

This talk examines animacy-sensitive demonstratives in Waiwai (Cariban), focusing on the remote deictic contrast traditionally described between mîkro (animate) and mînî (inanimate).
Earlier grammatical descriptions and published narrative materials show a stable animate–inanimate distribution in natural discourse. However, elicited speech from bilingual Waiwai speakers reveals that the animate form mîkro can also occur with inanimate referents in controlled tasks.
The analysis compares narrative corpus data with elicited material and shows that the observed overlap is restricted to a single lexical item and does not affect the broader demonstrative system. These findings are situated within the typology of demonstrative systems and within the Cariban language family, illustrating how localized extensions may arise without implying structural change across the paradigm.

The thesis with the title "Exotisierte und feminisierte Körper an der kolumbianischen Karibikküste im Kontext von Tourismus" was examined by Dr. Sinah Kloss and Prof. Dr. Karoline Noack. 📝

La conferencia presenta primeros resultados de una investigación del culto a la Santa Muerte en el norte de México. El proyecto parte de la hipótesis de que este culto es fuertemente asociado a la marginalidad y al crimen organizado, y que su mayor presencia en comunidades rurales y urbanas se debe al fuerte crecimiento del narcotráfico en la última década. Durante un periodo de seis meses se realizó una serie de acercamientos etnográficos, desde una muestra intencional no representativa, en espacios de veneración en los Estados de Sonora, Sinaloa, Baja California y Chihuahua. Se presentan prácticas y rituales y las tres formas de relacionamiento: individual, folclórica e institucional, que afectan el orden social y moral de los devotos. Se discuten los resultados en el contexto de teorías antropológicas y filosóficas de la religión (Tylor, Gertz, Stein, Bourdieu, Foucault, etc.) y se presentan interpretaciones acerca de los significados y prácticas en torno al culto.

📚 New Publication | Chapter co-written by Dr. Caterina Mantilla, researcher and lecturer and our department

The chapter "Archaeology of Slavery in South America" by Johana Caterina Mantilla Oliveros and Luis Symanski addresses the development of the archaeology of the African diaspora in South America. This is a field that timidly emerged in the late twentieth century in a few South American countries, particularly Brazil, and has substantially increased during the first quarter of this century. While the early studies have focused on maroon settlements, like the Quilombo dos Palmares, the research scope has amplified in the last decades to include slave quarters, cemeteries, and urban contexts, under theoretical perspectives which emphasize power relations and cultural contact theories. The chapter begins characterizing the Atlantic slave trade to the continent, followed by a general description of the archaeological scholarship encompassing the main contexts that have been studied, and the debates that have marked the field.
