📢Colloquium | 1 June | 4-6 PM | Room 1.002

Esta presentación expone avances de una investigación doctoral sobre los bogas del río Magdalena durante el siglo XIX. A partir del análisis de relatos de viajeros, prensa, reglamentación y cuadros de costumbres, se propone comprender la navegación fluvial como una zona de contacto en la que interactuaron bogas, viajeros y autoridades republicanas. El eje de la charla es el estudio de los itinerarios corporales de los bogas, entendidos como prácticas cotidianas vinculadas al trabajo de navegar, remar, cargar, cantar, coordinarse y transitar el río. Desde esta perspectiva, se busca mostrar cómo estos cuerpos fueron objeto de discursos y estrategias de disciplinamiento, pero también cómo, mediante su quehacer cotidiano, los bogas mantuvieron formas propias de habitar y recorrer el espacio fluvial.

Dr. Benjamin Vining is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology and the Environmental Dynamics Program at the University of Arkansas. This year, he is a Visiting Scholar at the McDonald Institute of Archaeology and a Fellow at Wolfson College at the University of Cambridge. In his talk, Dr. Vining will discuss corridor analysis as a new method for understanding the development of major interaction spheres during the pre-Hispanic period in the Andes.

📢Dies Academicus | 20 May | 4-6 PM

On Wednesday, May 20, the conference “The Material Side of Heritage: The Case of a Theban Tomb (TT 93, Quenamon)” will be presented by Dr. Bernarda Marconetto (CONICET, Argentina). The talk introduces a project that seeks to reconstruct the complete biography of an Egyptian tomb, from its construction to the present, within the framework of emerging heritage perspectives. In doing so, it challenges the traditional North–South flow of archaeological
knowledge and proposes an alternative model of international collaboration.

The talk is part of the event “Heritage and the Making of Deserts” which takes place between 20 and 22 May and is organized by Dr. Cecilia Argañaraz-postdoctorant in the Dept. of Anthropology of the Americas. The main focus of the event is to share a South-South research experience between South America and Egypt.

🧑🏼‍🏫Führung durch die neue Ausstellung im BASA-Museum (Bonner Amerikanistische Sammlung).

🪾Gesellschaftliche und politische Verhältnisse – des Inka-Staats, des Kolonialstaats nach der spanischen Eroberung bis hin zur Gegenwart – prägen Landschaften. Landschaften beeinflussen aber auch die Art und Weise, wie Herrschaft ausgeübt werden kann. Die Führung durch die Ausstellung geht auf dieses Wechselspiel ein. Thematische Schwerpunkte sind die Zeit der Inka, während der ca. 4.000 Lagerhäuser für die Aufnahme einer intensiven Maisproduktion gebaut worden sind. Dies war durch die Umsiedlung von Tausenden von Menschen möglich geworden, die sich dieser Produktion widmeten. Es wird ein Schlaglicht auf die Alliierten der Inka im Tal geworfen, die in der Forschung bisher kaum bekannt waren. Schließlich werden populäre Glaubensvorstellungen im Cochabamba-Tal vorgestellt, die an vorspanische Traditionen anknüpfen.

"Hacer crecer: algunas noticias sobre la circulación infantil en las tierras bajas sudamericanas"

¿Cómo podemos comprender el sentido de las prácticas de circulación infantil tal como son vividas por los pueblos indígenas de las tierras bajas de Sudamérica? Esta presentación propone sentar las bases para responder a esta pregunta a partir del análisis del caso etnográfico del pueblo Kulina, que habita a lo largo del río Purús, en Perú. En lugar de emplear términos como “adopción” o “acogida” (fosterage), mis interlocutores utilizan, en su idioma, un verbo que puede ser traducido como “hacer crecer” un niño que no es biológicamente propio. Basándome en esto, examinaré los significados sociales y relacionales asociados con los actos de hacer crecer entre los Kulina, así como sus implicaciones para la organización de la vida social.

APPROACHES TO SPIRITUAL AND RITUAL PRACTICES IN AFRO-LATIN AMERICAN RELIGIONS

👤Led by Prof. Dr. Lucio Menezes Ferriera of the Federal University of Pelotas & the Museo Nacional, UFRJ (Brazil) and a Bonn International Fellow for 2026

This workshop is aimed at students and researchers from the University of Bonn, as well as from other universities, who are interested in the materiality of Afro-Latin American spiritual practices.
Drawing on objects from the Figgue Collection at the BASA Museum of the Department of Anthropology of the Americas from the University of Bonn, Prof. Dr. Menezes will address this topic through three specific segments:
1. Stories beyond the human in the Black Atlantic
2. ‘Means of survival’ in the archives of the African diaspora
3. Ancestral technologies and the archaeology of spiritual practices in Afro-Latin America.
This will enable participants to gain new perspectives on Afro-Latin American archaeological, cultural and social anthropological studies and to engage more deeply with them in current debates.

Archäologische Untersuchungen mit modernen Methoden wie LiDAR zeigen, dass hier bereits vor mehr als 1000 Jahren komplexe stadtähnliche
Siedlungen entstanden, die an die Bedingungen einer von Überschwemmungen geprägten Landschaft angepasst waren. Heute ist dieses Erbe durch rasante Abholzung, Brände und agroindustrielle Expansion akut bedroht."
