PARI has published a new paper titled “Opportunity or Necessity? Youth Agripreneurs in Benin, Ethiopia and Senegal”, which presents the socio-demographic background of youth agriprepreneurs and their businesses in Benin, Ethiopia, and Senegal. This report provides a descriptive analysis of youth entrepreneurs in agribusiness in Sub-Saharan Africa. Based on primary data collected in Benin, Ethiopia, and Senegal, it offers insights into the socio-demographic background of the youth entrepreneurs as well as a detailed account of the business units they run. The analysis shows a diversity of business activities across the entire food value chain but with a strong concentration in farming, followed by processing and retail.

PARI has published a new paper titled “Is There Unrecognized Potential in Neglected Livestock Species in Sub-Saharan Africa?” This paper presents a systematic review of the literature on four neglected species, which could contribute to meeting the increasing demand for animal protein in Sub-Saharan Africa: grasscutter, guinea fowl, guinea pig, and rabbit. Overall, this review shows the untapped nutritional and socio-economic potential of neglected livestock species, which, if incorporated into mainstream production, could improve food security and reduce unemployment in SSA.

PARI has published a new paper titled “Small-Scale Irrigation in the Sahel Adoption Trends, Profitability, and Challenges”, which examines the adoption, profitability, and constraints of small-scale irrigation technologies in the Sahel region. This paper analyzes the current uptake of small-scale irrigation (SSI), its profitability, and the constraints to its broader adoption in the Sahel using literature and survey data from Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Senegal. The results show very low SSI adoption rates in the Sahel region. With the highest rates, Mali outperforms its neighbours, despite its political instability. However, FSSI is more common than NFSSI in Niger and Burkina Faso and less common in Mali and Senegal.

PARI has published a new paper titled “Silicon Savannah and smallholder farming: How can digitalization contribute to sustainable agricultural transformation in Africa?” This study examines to what extent digital solutions can effectively address the challenges faced by smallholder farmers. The findings reveal that the number of digital tools available to smallholder farmers has tripled over the past decade, with a peak in new digital start-ups in 2016, followed by a slowdown. The analysis indicates digital tools can enhance farmers’ knowledge and access to inputs, services, and markets, boosting productivity and income.

PARI has published a new paper titled “Animal Feed Policies and Feeding Practices in Ethiopia," which assesses the availability and quality of animal feed in different livestock production systems, the feeding practices of smallholder livestock producers, and the policy actions adopted by the government to improve the availability and quality of animal feed in Ethiopia. The results of the study show that livestock production systems in Ethiopia are largely mixed crop-livestock, pastoral, or agro-pastoral.

New publication alert!

PARI has published a new paper titled “Not all is lost – A case study of agrobiodiversity trends in Ghanaian and Burkinabe villages”, which aims to gain a better understanding of the status and patterns of crop and genetic diversity, using eight villages in selected regions of Burkina Faso and Ghana as case studies. The findings show that access to finance remains a critical challenge for bio-based start-ups in East Africa. The findings from the case study villages show that “not all is lost” and that crop and varietal diversity is increasing in some parts of Africa – while it is declining in other parts.
