Our curriculum is part of the successful “Two-Subject-B.A.’’ at the Faculty of Humanities and Studies in Education (undergraduate level). In addition, we fully cover the teacher-training courses for the different school types and levels in the Master of Education (Grund-
schule, Haupt-Realschule, Gymnasium with a specialisation in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)). In addition, we a

re involved in innovative and interdisciplinary courses of studies, for example, an MA programme in Culture of the Techno-scientific World (KTW), and BA/MA programmes in Media Studies, Performing Arts and Art (Braunschweig University of Art (HBK)). In collaboration with our international partners, we offer opportunities for students to study abroad, and we organise both cultural and academic excursions (for example, to Washington D.C., London, and Stratford-upon-Avon). We encourage the teaching and learning of English through tandem-teaching and school projects. In Literary Studies, we have a student theatre group (TUBS Players), which has performed many successful shows in English, and an extensive media library. In Linguistics, we have an Eye Tracking Laboratory, and, in teacher training, we work with tablets, whiteboards, and video-editing suites. In addition, we support creative writing, we travel with students to conferences, and organise student conferences and poster sessions. Many of our teaching staff have completed university-level teaching skills programmes (teach4TU) and are regularly nominated for teaching awards. Our innovative teaching projects are frequently sponsored by external funding. We also support our students in sustaining their own student advocacy group (“Fachgruppe”). Our research is recognized internationally. Our researchers are active in international organisations and have received a number of prizes and awards: for example from the Anglistenverband, and the German Association for the Study of British Cultures. Furthermore, our research has been funded by a number prestigious scientific foundations such as the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the German Research Council (DFG), the Volkswagen Foundation, and the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture (NMWK).

RIP Louise Glück

RIP Louise Glück

Master poet, Louise Glück has passed. An enormous loss for poetry. From her Pulitzer Prize winning collection, The Wild Iris.

The Wild Iris

At the end of my suffering
there was a door.

Hear me out: that which you call death
I remember.

Overhead, noises, branches of the pine shifting.
Then nothing. The weak sun
flickered over the dry surface.

It is terrible to survive
as consciousness
buried in the dark earth.

Then it was over: that which you fear, being
a soul and unable
to speak, ending abruptly, the stiff earth
bending a little. And what I took to be
birds darting in low shrubs.

You who do not remember
passage from the other world
I tell you I could speak again: whatever
returns from oblivion returns
to find a voice:

from the center of my life came
a great fountain, deep blue
shadows on azure seawater.

“Hell is empty and all the devils are here.”
― William Shakespeare, The Tempest

The Tempest is a play by William Shakespeare, probably written in 1610–1611, and thought to be one of the last plays that he wrote alone. After the first scene, which takes place on a ship at sea during a tempest, the rest of the story is set on a remote island, where Prospero, a complex and contradictory character, lives with his daughter Miranda, and his two servants: Caliban, a savage monster figure, and Ariel, an airy spirit. The play contains music and songs that evoke the spirit of enchantment on the island. It explores many themes, including magic, betrayal, revenge, and family. In Act IV, a wedding masque serves as a play-within-a-play, and contributes spectacle, allegory, and elevated language.

Although The Tempest is listed in the First Folio as the first of Shakespeare's comedies, it deals with both tragic and comic themes, and modern criticism has created a category of romance for this and others of Shakespeare's late plays.
