A semester abroad can be carried out successfully even in corona times...

"My exchange semester in Sweden was a unique and great experience (despite the Corona crisis). The orientation program, organized by ESN Örebro, was very well planned and the perfect opportunity to meet plenty of other Erasmus students. ESN also organizes some amazing trips, e.g. to Lapland, Norway, and St. Petersburg. Unfortunately, some trips were canceled due to the pandemic, however, I'm convinced each would have been an unforgettable trip. Örebro itself is also very beautiful, especially if the sun comes out in summer. There are lovely restaurants, bars, clubs, etc., which we, unfortunately, couldn't visit too often due to the situation. Going out in Sweden is a bit more expensive compared to Germany, however still affordable. Also, the nature around Örebro is absolutely beautiful. There are several nice lakes and little towns to visit. Studying at Örebro University is a bit different; each full-time course is taught for a couple of weeks only and not the entire semester. Many courses are taught in Swedish, however, courses taught in English are also offered. At the University, everybody speaks English, which made communicating very easy.
All students live in "Studentgatan", where the student dorms are located. Parties or Pre-parties are happening there all the time which makes meeting other students very easy.

All in all, I had a lovely time in Sweden and I would do it all over again."

One of our first exchange students who went to Galway, Ireland.

"I spent my semester abroad at the National University of Ireland in Galway and I have to say that I really fell in love with this city, although I had to leave earlier than planned due to the Coronavirus crisis. Galway is not a big city, but it is such a vibrant place with the typical Irish charm and it is full of young people. It is located on the doorstep of Connemara with its beautiful landscape. One great experience for me was a hiking trip there with the Mountaineering Club of the university. NUIG is a big university and it has plenty of societies and clubs that you can join. I also joined the International Society and participated in a weekend trip to Belfast – one of the highlights of my stay. Besides, I met so many people from all over the world and build friendships that will hopefully outlast my semester abroad.

There were also some challenges: I definitely had to get accustomed to the Irish weather (be prepared to get wet!) and living in Ireland is quite expensive as well. However, I would definitely make the decision to go there again. I am very sad that I only had 10 weeks there, but it was enough time to take Ireland, Galway, NUIG and so many people to my heart. I already know that I will visit this place again to make up for the missed time and drink another Guinness in one of the lovely pubs of Galway!"

Once upon in Rotterdam...

I’m Allison Hadden and I’m a Science Communication student. I did my internship at &ranj, design studio in Rotterdam, Netherlands. This company designs serious games to achieve positive behavioral change through play, by using gamification and game thinking methodologies.

During my 6 months internship I was involved in different projects, for which I carried out different tasks. For example, I did many project-specific research tasks, produced videos, wrote articles, tried new, fun, gaming technology, participated in usability tests, etc. If time allowed it, I also had the liberty to
propose specific activities I was personally interested in doing.

&ranj is also a very fun, flexible studio where they often organize fun activities for all employees, such as learning days, or just fun afternoons where you get the chance to get to know your colleagues better.

Everyone working there is very welcoming and supportive of your learning goals. They are always open for any questions and willing to give feedback. I really recommend this studio if you’re interested in serious games ;)

As for Rotterdam, this is a city I particularly enjoyed living in a lot. It is big enough that you are never short of things to do, it is not as crowded as Amsterdam, and you can still get everywhere by bike. They have tons of cultural activities (many of them free), concerts, restaurants, parties, etc.
