Studis aufgepasst! Am Freitag, 12.06. um 14 Uhr im Seminarraum rechts (Institut für Linguistik, 2.OG) hält Dr. Simon Wehrle mit Input von Sabina Oliver einen Vortrag zum Thema Language und Neurodiversity mit dem Titel "Cognitive diversity, cultural variation, and Individual differences"
Hier ist das Abstract:
In this talk, I will use my research on communication in autism as a vantage point to highlight key aspects of neurodiversity. After an introduction to the topic, I will present empirical results on conversational behaviour in dyads that are either composed of two autistic interlocutors or two non-autistic interlocutors. I focus here on turn-taking (the organisation of who speaks when) and backchannels (feedback signals like “mmhm”). Following this, I will summarise results from a complementary analysis comparing native with non-native speakers of German, which suggest intriguing parallels between cross-neurotype and cross-cultural communication.
Sabina Oliver (MA linguistics student and research assistant on project A02 of the SFB 1252 in Cologne) will further expand on the interplay between cultural and cognitive factors by drawing on relevant literature and personal reflections.
Overall, I argue that embracing the importance of individual-specific behaviour and recognising the primacy of conversational interaction can guide us toward a more holistic, inclusive model of communication and cognition.
