This panel discussion is part of the University of Cologne’s contribution to the 25th anniversary of the Scholars At Risk network. With Truth Matters, we reaffirm our commitment to academic freedom and the protection of threatened scholars.

What does it mean to pursue knowledge when the home country becomes dangerous, inaccessible, or lost?

On June 9, we will bring together different perspectives at the intersection of human rights, academic freedom, civic technology, and expressions in times of oppression and displacement.

Angelika Nußberger, Denis Yagodin, Amira Ahmed, and Samer Alkarkoukly will discuss the challenges of academic restrictions and solidarity, as well as the far-reaching consequences of political and transborder repression on academia.

Zum Jubiläum präsentieren wir 10 inspirierende Geschichten von Menschen, die wir auf ihrem Weg unterstützen durften. Jeden Monat erscheint ein neues Porträt.

Heute: Porträt 3 – Mustafa aus dem Irak

In seinem Heimatland war er bereits als Rechtsanwalt tätig. Mit der Ankunft in Deutschland begann ein neuer Lebensabschnitt mit dem klaren Ziel, die juristische Laufbahn fortzusetzen.

Nach unseren studienvorbereitenden Deutschkursen studiert er nun im Masterstudiengang für im Ausland graduierte Juristinnen und Juristen (LL.M.) an der Uni Köln.

Parallel engagiert er sich in der Refugee Law Clinic Köln sowie als Vorstandsmitglied beim „Hürther Brücke Kultur e.V.“

Er bringt seine Expertise zudem als Case Manager im Kommunalen Integrationsmanagement NRW ein.

Today: Portrait 3 – Mustafa from Iraq

After working as a lawyer in his home country, arriving in Germany marked the beginning of a new chapter in Mustafa's life, with a clear goal: to continue pursuing a career in law.

Having completed our preparatory German language courses, he is now enrolled in the Uni Cologne LL.M. programme for internationally trained lawyers.

Alongside his studies, he is actively involved with the Refugee Law Clinic Cologne and serves as a board member of the association “Hürther Brücke Kultur e.V.” In addition, he currently contributes his expertise as a Case Manager within the Municipal Integration Management program (KIM) in NRW.

🇬🇪 Today! 20 May 2026 — The Crisis of Georgian Universities: Causes, Consequences and Futures

Over the last years the government of the Republic of Georgia has made headlines with suspending negotiations to join the EU until 2028 and implementing the Foreign Agents Registration Act following the Russian model. However, a widely overlooked process is in motion to change the University landscape of the country drastically.

After a speech of the Georgian Prime minister Irakli Kobachidse last year the government has started to cut the independence of the Universities, limit the number of students dramitcally and disconnect Georgia from the European Higher Education Area. The consequences of these measures for students, staff, education, international exchange, research cooperation and the democracy in Georgia will bei discussed in our panel after a keynote speech from Ilia State University ...

Invitational Fellowships for Research in Japan

» The programs provide excellent researchers from other countries an opportunity to conduct collaborative research, discussions, and opinion exchanges with researchers in Japan. These programs are intended to help advance the overseas researchers' research activities while advancing science and promoting internationalization in Japan.

JSPS Invitational Fellowships for Research in Japan consists of two options of Long-term, and Short-term. Grantees are selected by going through the selection process following the submission of applications by a host researcher in Japan who wishes to invite a researcher from overseas via the head of their university or institution.
