On 6 September, the Global Composition 2026 continues at Centralstation Darmstadt with a 3D audio workshop reflecting on the artistic and technical approaches developed for Club of the Future and offering insight into the concepts and methods behind the project.

The workshop begins with an introductory lecture by Prof. Sabine Breitsameter, Not a Neutral Concept: Preliminary Thoughts on Immersivity and Critical Thinking, followed by a practical session led by Prof. Sabine Breitsameter and Robin Wiemann exploring the creative processes, technologies, and collaborative practices involved in developing immersive 3D audio environments.

What does a club sound like when the audience shapes the sound?

Club of the Future is an immersive 3D-audio event that transforms the club into a space for participation, collective listening, and acoustic ecology. Through spatial audio, sensors, generative composition, and immersive media, the work explores how listening can become a democratic, ecological, and collaborative practice.

The evening unfolds in three acts: an opening of immersive soundscape compositions, interactive sonic environments that evolve through collective presence, and a 3D-audio performer set as the main performance. The night concludes by returning to the soundscape, creating a space for reflection and resonance.

Attendance is included for all on-site participants of the Global Composition 2026.

Join us for a guided tour of the Waldkunstpfad in Darmstadt.

The tour explores two site-specific works created in collaboration with the Waldkunstpfad and the Global Composition 2026: Listening with Songs of the Trees by Eric Leonardson and Sounding Earth by Bidisha Das. Set along a 3.3 km forest path stretching from Böllenfalltor to Ludwigshöhe,The Waldkunstpfad has been bringing art and forest together since 2002, inviting visitors to encounter the forest in new ways through artistic practice. This year, sound joins the conversation.

Day 0 begins in the forest.

Der Hörweg (The Listening Path) leads five kilometres through the Dieburg forest, opening up an acoustic world that is always around us, yet often remains unnoticed. Across eleven listening stations, the forest reveals the communication of ants, the vibrations of frogs, the crackling life of an old oak, the symphony of insects, and the ultrasonic calls of bats transformed into audible sound. It is a journey into the sounds we hear, the sounds we miss, and the sounds that remain unheard.

As part of the Global Composition 2026, sound artist and educator Aleksandar Vejnovic will guide participants along the trail. The path is also suitable for bicycles.

Please bring a fully charged smartphone with mobile internet access, headphones, comfortable walking shoes, and water and snacks.

Meet our keynote workshop leader Hildegard Westerkamp, a sound activist, composer, and soundscape educator whose compositions and written work are known in many parts of the world. A pioneering figure in soundscape composition and the practice of soundwalking, she received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree, honoris causa, from Simon Fraser University in 2024.

Her keynote workshop 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘓𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 invites participants to explore and reflect on their own listening processes and how the principles of acoustic ecology and soundscape listening can be applied in both professional and personal realms. Drawing on her own life story, including soundwalks, field recordings, sonic installations, writings, and soundscape compositions, Westerkamp offers her practice as a place of departure for the next generations of soundscape listeners and creators.

Meet our keynote speaker Barry Truax, Professor Emeritus at Simon Fraser University (Burnaby, Canada), worked with the World Soundscape Project, editing its Handbook for Acoustic Ecology and publishing Acoustic Communication, a foundational text on sound and technology. His multi-channel soundscape compositions are regularly featured in concerts and festivals worldwide.

His keynote lecture, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘷𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘛𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘚𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘦: 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘚𝘶𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘌𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘚𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘦, traces how early reactions to reproduced sound repositioned listening as an accompaniment phenomenon, turning the listener into a consumer. From there, he follows the expanded concept of listening pioneered by Murray Schafer and Bernie Krause toward a model of acoustic ecology that today extends even beyond the human.

His central thesis: that experiencing listening within an acoustic ecosystem, feeling part of a larger perspective, can influence our worldview, and even allow us to sense the sublime.

Deciding what is audible is not a neutral act. It is always also an ethical one.

Meet our keynote speaker, Diane Schuh, a composer-researcher and postdoctoral fellow at EURArTeC/CICM Paris 8/APM-IRCAM. She holds a PhD in Aesthetics, Science and Technology of the Arts from Université Paris 8 and a national diploma in landscape architecture from ENSP Versailles. Her research investigates posthuman co-creativity through transdisciplinary methods combining sound ecology, critical technology studies, and landscape thinking.

Her keynote lecture 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘌𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘉𝘦𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯, 𝘌𝘹𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 explores how artistic research can operationalize a posthuman sound ecology. Drawing on Schwab and Borgdorff's concept of "expositionality," she argues that sound ecology dispositifs function as apparatuses of disambiguation, making explicit the technical and ethical negotiations that configure what counts as audible.

Her focus is Troisième Nature (2026), which critically re-examines Electronic Plant Music by distinguishing biological agency from the musical agency typically attributed to plants through sonification. Artistic research, she proposes, does not produce transparent access to non-human voices, but rather situated articulations in which the chain of mediation itself becomes the site of knowledge production.

Some sounds feel foreign. Others feel familiar. The line between them is rarely where we expect it to be.

Meet our workshop leader, Lasse-Marc Riek, a sound artist and composer based in Hanau whose work explores acoustic ecology, bioacoustics, and soundscapes through field recording. Since 1997, he has been active internationally with exhibitions, concerts, publications, lectures, and workshops across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. He is co-founder of Gruenrekorder, a label that since 2001 has focused on soundscapes, field recordings, and electroacoustic compositions, fostering collaboration between artists and scientists.

His keynote workshop 𝘌𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘌𝘭𝘴𝘦𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 immerses participants in "acoustic alterity." Guided by raw field recordings from Mauritania, it challenges listening habits through a blind listening session that asks what strikes us as foreign and what feels familiar. Participants then work in pairs to decode sonic expectations and translate personal memories of the unknown into evocative sonic metaphors, distilling these dialogues into a shared Vocabulary of the Unfamiliar: a visual glossary and conceptual resource for creative practice.

Cities are designed to be seen. Rarely to be heard.

Meet our keynote speaker, Mohammed Boubezari, a tenured researcher and professor at Universidade Lusófona (Lisbon), Department of Architecture and Urbanism. His work explores the relationship between sound, space, and design, and he currently chairs the COST Action project CitySenZ, which examines architectural and urban ambiances across European cities.

His keynote lecture 𝘊𝘢𝘯 𝘞𝘦 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘦 𝘊𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘣𝘺 𝘌𝘢𝘳?
questions the visual bias of design and explores whether soundscapes can be approached like landscapes, with their own sources, structures, and topologies. It examines who shapes the city's sound, highlighting citizens' everyday practices as a form of collective authorship, and reflects on the role and limits of designers.

The talk introduces emerging tools to represent and design sonic environments, from qualitative sound mapping to the idea of a "soundscape-graph," inspired by the historical role of perspective in visual culture. It also discusses the potential of generative AI to support more responsive and inclusive sonic design.

A city speaks through its sounds but what happens when those sounds begin to disappear?

Meet our keynote workshop leader, Avan-Nomayo Ikponmwosa, whose work as a Nigerian curator, researcher, and adjunct lecturer at Hochschule Darmstadt explores curatorial practice, urban cultures, and questions of documentation. His current research focuses on African sound cultures and the politics of listening, examining how acoustic environments shape memory, public life, and infrastructural imagination across West African cities.

His workshop 𝘊𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘚𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘬 examines African urban sound cultures as acoustic infrastructures that organize social life. Drawing on Nigerian examples, it attends to trade signatures, signal instruments, and communal rhythms: the mobile tailor's scissors, the town crier's agogo, the knife sharpener's bell, okada horn codes, the mortar and pestle through which Nigerian cities transmit shared urban literacies. Read as endangered intangible heritage, these vanishing sonic forms raise questions about archival ethics, listening as situated knowledge, and the responsibilities acoustic ecology bears toward the soundworlds receding from African cities.
