From Classroom to Gallery: Celebrating Nowruz and IMC Student Success in the Professional Art Scene

Today marks Nowruz, the Persian New Year, a time of renewal, reflection and the official arrival of spring. At the International Media Cultural Work (IMC) program, we are proud to celebrate our global community by sharing the work of our Master’s student, Meral Pourhosseinzadeh.

Meral recently concluded her solo photography exhibition, "What thread remains from what we weave each day", which offers a powerful critique of cultural cycles and material disposal. The title of the exhibition is inspired by the profound poetry of Omar Khayyam Neyshabouri:

از آمدن و رفتن ما سودی کو
از بافته‌ی وجود ما پودی کو؟
(What thread remains from what we weave each day?)

Through her photography, Meral investigates the afterlife of the Persian carpet, a masterpiece of craftsmanship that takes on a somber role in ceremonial funerary rituals in Iran. This collection documents these carpets not in a romanticized light, but in the locations where they are ultimately discarded after being used to carry the deceased.

This project highlights core pillars of the IMC curriculum:
- Critical Thinking: Challenging the "sensorial presence" of objects and the ethics of disposal.
- Cultural Impact: Bridging the gap between traditional handcraft and contemporary social commentary.
- Transdisciplinary Research: Using media to document the "quiet tension" between endurance and dissolution in cultural heritage.

Watch the interview to hear Meral discuss the research and the stories behind these carpets.

Congratulations, Meral, and a Happy Nowruz to all celebrating! 🕊️
