We were delighted to welcome Judith Hesse as a guest speaker in our Trademark, Design & Data Law in Practice series for an inspiring session on “Likelihood of Confusion in the EU – Recent Cases.” Drawing on her extensive experience as an attorney in intellectual property law, Judith provided valuable insights into recent European trademark case law and highlighted the practical relevance of the likelihood of confusion assessment in modern trademark practice. As founder of the IP boutique, she advises clients in trademark, design, competition, copyright and media law and combines legal expertise with a highly practical perspective.
Thank you, Judith, for sharing your expertise and practical experiences with our students and for making this session such a valuable and inspiring exchange.

A great start to the week with an engaging session on Music and Entertainment Law as part of the module Characteristics of German IP Law.
Many thanks to Prof. Dr. Hanno Fierdag, who — despite the online format — created a highly interactive and dynamic lecture experience. With his many years of teaching experience, he once again demonstrated how fascinating and practical intellectual property law can be, especially in the context of the music and entertainment industries. The lecture provided valuable insights into copyright protection, licensing structures, artists’ rights, and the legal challenges arising from digital media and the evolving entertainment landscape. A truly interesting and inspiring Monday session with excellent discussions and practical perspectives on German IP law.

A beautiful Friday morning in May dedicated to discussing pharmaceutical advertising and the evolving legal landscape under European law.
Many thanks to Dr. Jeannette Viniol von JBViniol for her highly insightful presentation on the regulatory boundaries and opportunities of pharmaceutical advertising within the European legal framework.
The session explored key questions around what is legally permissible in pharmaceutical marketing, how EU regulations shape communication strategies, and the increasing importance of compliance in a rapidly evolving healthcare environment. An engaging exchange of perspectives at the intersection of law, healthcare, and innovation — and a great opportunity to connect with experts and professionals from the field.

We were delighted to welcome Dr. Diana Ettig back to TU Dresden for a guest lecture on Data Protection and Minors on May 8th. As a former graduate of our program and now a lawyer specializing in data protection and digital law, Dr. Ettig advises companies on matters related to GDPR compliance, digital regulation, and legal issues concerning online platforms and data-driven technologies. In her lecture, she addressed the particular challenges of protecting children and adolescents in the digital environment, focusing on consent, online platforms, privacy rights, and targeted advertising under European data protection law. By combining academic expertise with practical legal experience, Dr. Ettig offered our students valuable insights into one of the most relevant and rapidly evolving fields of law. We sincerely thank Dr. Ettig for this insightful contribution to our programme!

To prepare German-speaking students as effectively as possible for the challenges of intellectual property and data law, our programme offers the option of taking the module ‘Characteristics in German IP Law’ in German. In addition to the specific features of national trade mark, patent, copyright and design law, we also discuss unfair competition law in depth with students as an exciting area of law. As part of our practical lectures, we were particularly delighted that last Monday our long-standing and esteemed lecturer Dr Hauke Hansen from the law firm FPS delivered a lecture on the topic ‘What is actually permitted in advertising’, which was as informative and entertaining as ever. Many thanks to Hauke and the entire FPS team!

Our research workshop on Generative Artificial Intelligence and Intellectual Property in the European Union was a huge success! 🚀✨
From 16 to 17 April, we collaborated with our colleagues from the Centre d'Etudes Internationales de la Propriété Intellectuelle - CEIPI in Strasbourg and a brilliant group of students from many different countries and legal backgrounds to focus on the most exciting and crucial topics on the intersection of artificial intelligence and intellectual property. During the workshop, our students sought to answer emerging questions relating to labelling and transparency obligations, the protectability of AI-generated outputs under copyright law, and fair remuneration systems in several different sectors, including music, dance, journalism, and video games. Despite our busy schedule and limited time, the students performed exceptionally well in both the research phase and their oral presentations to the audience. 💯
Ultimately, our students and team had the opportunity to visit the European Parliament in Strasbourg and gain insight into the legislative processes that shape the future of Europe. As a bonus, we also had the opportunity to experience fine French cuisine during our dinner, where scientific discussions and the exchange of ideas continued in a more relaxed setting. 🥂
We would like to take this opportunity to thank our students, colleagues from CEIPI for hosting us, Jean-Marc Deltorn, Elodie Migliore, Ionela Asandulesei as well as our team members, Prof. Anne Lauber-Rönsberg, Berhan Sarılar, LL.M., İrem Aydın, LL.M.
You can also find some photos below highlighting our visit to Strasbourg and our workshop. 📸 💫

We were delighted to welcome back our former colleague Dr. Helena Kowalewska Jahromi for two days of engaging and insightful teaching. She began with a workshop on Law & Economics, offering students valuable perspectives on interdisciplinary legal analysis. This was followed by the opening session of her seminar “Who’s Who in EU Digital Legislation: A closer look at legal subjects regulated in the AI Act, Data Act, DSA, GDPR.” The seminar introduces students to jurisprudential research in the field of EU digital legislation, with a particular focus on the legal entities addressed in key regulatory frameworks such as the Digital Services Act, the Data Act, and the AI Act. It also explores different methods of legal analysis, including economic approaches and comparative perspectives. It is always a special pleasure to welcome back former colleagues and to benefit from their extensive expertise. Thank you, Helena, for sharing your knowledge and insights with our students!

Every year, our program begins with one of its most important academic milestones: The lecture in EU Law. As a part of the induction week, it lays the foundation for the legal and institutional understanding that accompanies our students throughout their further studies. It is therefore especially meaningful that this lecture has, for many years, been delivered by Mario Tepe, lawyer at V14, Berlin. Mario Tepe is a colleague who is valued for his academic expertise and also his good connection he establishes with our students. His continued commitment has become an integral part of our program and contributes greatly to the academic spirit with which each new cohort begins its journey. We are deeply grateful for his longstanding support and look forward to another inspiring start to the academic year.

A wonderful evening with our students at our recent beer garden get-together, set in the shadow of Dresden’s iconic Frauenkirche.
What began as an informal gathering quickly turned into a lively and engaging exchange, with thoughtful academic discussions continuing well beyond the classroom — alongside plenty of good conversation and a relaxed atmosphere. Events like these are a great reminder that academic life thrives not only in lectures and seminars, but also in the spaces where ideas can be shared more freely. Thank you to everyone who joined — we truly enjoyed the evening!

Prost! 🍻 After an engaging lecture by Johannes Gilch on AI compliance, we met with our students on Wednesday at Lohrmanns Brew to warmly welcome our newly joined MIPDaL students. It was wonderful to see our second-semester students joining the gathering as well, creating a lively and inclusive atmosphere. Through this social event, students had the opportunity to connect, exchange ideas and experiences in a relaxed setting, and take a short break from the intensive period of lectures and seminars. 💭
Of course having the chance to enjoy different kinds of beer in a brewery setting was one of the highlights of the evening. ✨
