CIPSEM is a facility within the Faculty of Environmental Sciences at TU Dresden and responsible for the implementation of the UNEP/UNESCO/BMUV International Postgraduate-Program in Environmental Management for Developing and Emerging Countries. The target group are environmental experts from developing and emerging countries. Every year, a six-month long course, and three four-week short courses t

ake place. The long course covers a wide range of topics and emphasises links between them. The specialized short courses each have annually changing focus such as soil and land resources, integrated water management, ecosystem management and protection of biodiversity, sustainable cities, resource efficiency including waste management, mobility, energy or climate change.

With great enthusiasm, we have welcomed the participants of the 92nd UNEP/UNESCO/BMUKN International Short Course on Sustainable Mobility: Transforming Urban Spaces (SC92). Together with our 22 expert participants, we are beginning this four-week learning journey with the goal of deepening our understanding of sustainable mobility challenges in diverse contexts and exploring practical approaches to rethinking urban transport systems for more resilient, inclusive, and climate-friendly cities.

The rapid growth of cities worldwide has intensified pressures on urban mobility systems. Congestion, air pollution, noise, greenhouse gas emissions, and unequal access to safe, affordable, and efficient transport continue to undermine both human well-being and environmental health. Car-centric urban development not only consumes valuable land and resources but also accelerates climate change and social inequality. Without urgent action, mobility challenges will continue to compromise livability and hinder sustainable urban transformation.

The SC92 is designed to showcase the transformative potential of sustainable mobility solutions in addressing these challenges. Drawing from real-world case studies, evidence-based insights, and interactive reflections on lessons learned, we will highlight innovative strategies such as integrating nature-based infrastructure into transport planning, expanding active mobility options, advancing electrification, and promoting public transport as a backbone of sustainable urban growth.

With participants representing a wide spectrum of professionals from transport, urban planning, environmental management, and policy as well as civil society sectors, we are confident this collective expertise will foster creative and practical solutions that can be implemented in regional and global contexts. These solutions will not remain theoretical but will inform concrete actions and projects that advance the shift toward sustainable, equitable, and climate-resilient urban mobility.

This training is funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety through the German Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt) as a contribution to the UN Environment Programme and is endorsed by UNESCO.
We are grateful to the facilitators of this course: Prof Angela Francke, Prof Georg Hirte, Dr Thilo Becker, Prof Udo Becker, Ms Carolin Kiso, Prof Boorken-Kleefeld, Prof Frank Atzler, Dr Michael Jakob, Dr Markus Egermann, Dipl.
