Zentralinstitut für Lateinamerikastudien (ZILAS) Promoting scientific and public interest in Latin America is an essential goal of our center.

The Center for Latin American Studies (ZILAS), founded in 1986, is the only university center for Latin American area studies in southern Germany. Primary objectives

ZILAS aims to contribute to the understanding of social aspects and historical and current cultural phenomena in societies of different Latin American countries. Along with faculties of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt

(KU) and national and international external actors, it organizes and coordinates various academic events on the region. Interdisciplinary approach

We believe interdisciplinary cooperation is the most appropriate way to meet our objectives. The disciplines at the KU that currently specialize in the region are political science, human geography, history, literature, linguistics, theology, and social work. Transfer

Our specialization in Latin American studies provides opportunities to deal with the complex political, economic, and cultural relations that intertwine and link this region with Europe. Since the establishment of ZILAS, there have been several field trips to the region, exhibitions and information seminars in educational institutions. We also provide other services for the general public such as

• advising and informing political organizations and the press
• workshops
• lecture series
• an annual themed week focusing on one Latin American country
• an annual Latin American Film Festival

Agreements and network

More than 35 agreements with universities in Latin America, as well as our numerous contacts and collaborations in the area manifest close international research cooperation. These ties are reflected in a variety of ways, such as in the exchange of students and lecturers, joint publications, and collaborative research projects.

Auszeichnung für das ZILAS-Team

Das Zentralinstitut für Lateinamerikastudien der KU erhält den diesjährigen Preis der Maximilian-Bickhoff-Universitätsstiftung.

Der Preis würdigt das ZILAS als Plattform für den Dialog über Disziplinen und Grenzen hinweg. Im Rahmen seines 40-jährigen Bestehens veranstaltet das ZILAS am 11. Juni 2026 das siebte Maximilian-Bickhoff-Kolloquium.

Große Ehre für ZILAS-Mitglieder

Beim diesjährigen Dies Academicus der KU sind gleich zwei Forschungsarbeiten von ZILAS-Mitgliedern ausgezeichnet worden.

Mariah Freitas Monteiro erhielt den Professor-Sutor-Preis für ihre Dissertation Venenos maravilhosos. A indústria de agrotóxicos no Brasil na década de 1970, as políticas públicas e a empresa transnacional Bayer.

Christiane Hoth wurde mit dem Preis der Maximiliana Kocher-Stiftung ausgezeichnet. Ihre Arbeit trägt den Titel Frontier Medicine. Practices, Knowledge and Science in Southern Chile, 1883–1939.

Beide Arbeiten wurden von Prof. Dr. Thomas Fischer betreut.

Mariah Freitas Monteiro ist derzeit Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an der Professur für Geschichte Lateinamerikas in Eichstätt. Christiane Hoth tritt demnächst eine Stelle am German Historical Institute in Washington an.

Das ZILAS gratuliert den beiden Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen herzlich zu diesem Erfolg und wünscht ihnen für ihren weiteren beruflichen Werdegang alles Gute.

am 11. Juni 2026 feiert das Zentralinstitut für Lateinamerikastudien (ZILAS) sein 40-jähriges Bestehen.

Wir laden Sie herzlich ein, mit uns 40 Jahre Forschung zu und im Dialog mit Lateinamerika an der KU zu feiern. Kern des Jubiläums wird das Siebte Maximilian-Bickhoff-Kolloquium zum Thema „Lateinamerikastudien in Zeiten des Umbruchs“ sein. Dieses wird gerahmt von einer Eröffnungsfeier, einer Ausstellung zum Thema „Forschung im Dialog: 40 Jahre Lateinamerikastudien in Eichstätt“ sowie einem Alumni-Event des MA-Studiengangs Conflict, Memory and Peace. Und selbstverständlich dürfen auch lateinamerikanische Tänze und Musik nicht fehlen.

Narradoras migrantes venezolanas

Los días 25 y 26 de marzo de 2026 se realizará en la Universidad del Rosario este espacio académico dedicado al análisis de las narrativas de mujeres migrantes venezolanas en América Latina en la literatura contemporánea.

El evento reunirá a investigadoras, escritoras y académicas de distintas instituciones internacionales para dialogar sobre migración, memoria, género y lenguaje. La programación incluirá mesas académicas, presentaciones de investigación y un foro con la escritora Vaitière Alejandra Rojas en torno a su novela Algo habla con mi voz.

„Mirar la isla desde el mar”: Geopoéticas decoloniales desde el Caribe

Te invitamos a la conferencia de Miriam Lay Brander, en el marco del Seminario Internacional ¿Cómo volver? Restituciones, reparaciones, resiliencias ambientales en narrativas y universos visuales del Caribe, organizado por Kirenia Rodríguez Puerto (Universidad de La Habana) y Agnieszka Komorowska (Universidad de Kassel).

En esta edición, el seminario reúne ponencias que exploran un amplio espectro de la decolonialidad ecológica en el Caribe insular. El encuentro promueve estudios relacionados con la geopoética, la relación entre la música y el huracán, las afectaciones a la niñez por la crisis humanitaria de la región y la literatura de ciencia ficción.
