Geozentrum Nordbayern - Pal In the Section Palaeontology we analyze the evolution of ecosystems on long temporal scales.

We assess the environmental factors governing the waxing and waning of communities and entire ecosystems in earth history. Our goal is to predict the fate of marine ecosystems under current climate change. MorphSim was recently featured in a publication. The article was written in collaboration with Rachel Warnock, a member of the PaleoSynthesis Scientific Advisory Board and a Summer School instructor. MorphSim is a R package simulating realistic morphological matrices for total-evidence and tip-dated phylogenetics, including taphonomic preservation biases. DOI: 10.1111/2041-210x.70326

It’s the third day of the CONSENSIS workshop, and the team is still in good spirits and making good progress. PaleoSynthesis postdoc Danijela Dimitrijevic and Pal research assistant Aldo Benites Palomino are greatly supporting. As a reward ^^, we’re having our traditional workshop dinner tonight!

Modern LEDs and digital image processing in fluorescence microscopy make it possible to visualise skeletal structures that would otherwise be impossible (or very difficult) to detect in thin sections. Patrycja Dworczak, who is currently working as a postdoc with us at the GZN in Erlangen (Germany), has, together with her co-authors, applied this method to demonstrate that some Palaeozoic stromatoporoids originally possessed highly porous skeletons.
