Wir freuen uns sehr, Frau Dr. Clizia Franceschini in unserem Team als Forscherin zu haben.

Bereits seit einem halben Jahr bereichert sie unseren Bereich mit ihrer Expertise und widmet sich intensiv der Erforschung des immateriellen religiösen Kulturerbes.

In ihrer bisherigen Arbeit bei uns hat Frau Dr. Franceschini wertvolle Perspektiven auf die Bewahrung und Transformation religiöser Traditionen und Praktiken eingebracht. Ihre Forschung leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag dazu, die komplexen Dynamiken dieses lebendigen Erbes besser zu verstehen und für die Zukunft zu sichern.

Wir schätzen den bisherigen wissenschaftlichen Austausch sehr und freuen uns auf die Fortsetzung unserer gemeinsamen Projekte und die weiteren Impulse, die sie in unser Team einbringt!

Wer Kulturerbe hört, denkt meist an Schlösser, Kirchen und Burgen. Doch was ist eine Kirche ohne das immaterielle religiöse Erbe? Wie verhält sich das Denkmal zum viel schwieriger zu fassenden Geist des Gebäudes? Und was wird wie und aus welchen Gründen geschützt? Zu solchen Fragen forscht die Verwaltungsrechtlerin Dr. Clizia Franceschini in dem Projekt INHERENT (Intangible Religious Heritage and Religious Groups in national, european and global contexts). Sie geht das Thema ganz bewusst aus verschiedenen Perspektiven an. Neben juristischen Fragestellungen interessieren sie Erkenntnisse aus den Sozialwissenschaften, der Kunstgeschichte, Anthropologie und Religionswissenschaft.

Für drei Jahre arbeitet sie als Stipendiatin der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung an Heritage Strategies Viadrina. Man kann sich kaum einen passenderen Ort zur Erforschung dieser Fragen aussuchen als Brandenburg, wo sich nur wenige Menschen des immateriellen Kulturerbes ihrer Region bewusst sind, wo 80 Prozent angeben, Atheist*innen zu sein und wo die Migration im und nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg sowie die sozialistische Bildung der DDR die Bevölkerung bis heute prägen.

Vor kurzem hat eine studentische Gruppe aus dem Masterstudiengang Schutz Europäischer Kulturgüter ihr Podcast-Projekt 'The Sound of Handwerk' mit einer Bonusfolge abgeschlossen. Darin sind kleine, bislang unveröffentlichte Momente aus den Aufnahmesessions zu hören – und zum Schluss auch einige Outtakes, die zeigen, wie viel Arbeit (und Freude) in diesem Format steckt.

Wir freuen uns sehr über dieses gelungene Studienprojekt: Im Podcast-Jahr 2025 sind vier Werkstatt-Folgen entstanden, ergänzt durch zwei Specials (u. a. mit einer UNESCO-Expertin sowie einer Folge mit Bezug zu SEK/Siebenbürgen). Dass der Podcast – ganz ohne Fördermittel und ohne Marketingbudget – über alle Plattformen hinweg insgesamt rund 2.800 Aufrufe erreicht hat, ist ein bemerkenswertes Ergebnis.

Diesmal treffen wir uns online – ein Format, das nicht alles ersetzt, aber vieles ermöglicht und angesichts der eisigen Temperaturen draußen vermutlich von vielen mit spürbarer Erleichterung begrüßt wird. Umso mehr freuen wir uns auf konzentrierte Arbeit, neue Perspektiven und einen aufregenden Austausch zu aktuellen Fragen des Kulturgüterschutzes – von Praxisbeispielen bis zu übergreifenden Herausforderungen.

Come explore the margins of heritage!
Our Spring School “Heritage Horizons 2025” brought together 23 students from over a dozen countries and partnered with leading institutions in Germany, Serbia, Romania and Poland to investigate the layers of shared cultural heritage in the Banat and surrounding regions. Through eight intensive days of field-visits, lectures and collaborative group work, participants examined how shifting borders shape monument preservation and cultural identity.

At the kick-off meeting of the COST - European Cooperation in Science and Technology Action CRICULT (CA24125) – Cultural Heritage in Crisis: Transdisciplinary Assessment of Legal and Regulatory Frameworks, held in Brussels on 29th September 2025, PD Dr. Izabella Parowicz, Research Associate at the Chair of Heritage Studies and Coordinator of the Master’s Programme 'Strategies for European Cultural Heritage' at Europa-Universität Viadrina, was elected Vice-Chair.

The Action is chaired by Prof. Piotr Stec from the Uniwersytet Opolski, a partner institution of Viadrina. CRICULT brings together researchers from across Europe to address the vulnerability of cultural heritage during crises, including armed conflict, climate change, natural disasters, trafficking of artifacts, overtourism, and neglect.

Over the next four years, the Action will develop interdisciplinary research networks and provide policy recommendations to strengthen the protection of cultural heritage in times of crisis. Six Working Groups will coordinate research on different types of risks and produce comprehensive “crisis and solution matrices” as tools for both scholarship and policymaking.

In autumn 2026, one of CRICULT’s networking meetings will be hosted at the Collegium Polonicum w Słubicach– a wonderful opportunity to showcase our commitment to international cooperation in cultural heritage research.

Es ist schon eine Weile her: Vier Tage lang, vom 8. bis 11. September 2025, stand Frankfurt (Oder) ganz im Zeichen der Archäologie. Mehr als 250 Forscher*innen aus Deutschland und zahlreichen europäischen Ländern diskutierten über Funde, Methoden und Perspektiven – von der Steinzeit bis zur Neuzeit.

Neben spannenden Vorträgen bot das Programm Stadtführungen, Exkursionen nach Polen sowie einen Abendempfang im Rathaus. Veranstaltungsorte waren die Europa-Universität Viadrina und das Collegium Polonicum w Słubicach – ein idealer Rahmen für internationalen Austausch und grenzüberschreitende Zusammenarbeit.

Die Tagung wurde vom Mittel- und Ostdeutschen Verband für Altertumsforschung in Kooperation mit der Stiftung Europa-Universität Viadrina, der Professur für Denkmalkunde und dem Collegium Polonicum organisiert.

The VERY-N Summer School came to a close this past Saturday, and most of us have now returned home — filled with impressions, inspiration, and future plans.

While the students are taking home new insights, the lecturers are already exchanging thoughts on further academic collaborations. It’s been a truly international and interdisciplinary experience.

After a week of intensive collaboration, students from across Europe and beyond presented the first results of their work at the VERY-N Summer School. Each international team created a 2-minute video and an AI-generated poster, exploring neglected sites of architectural heritage and experimenting with narrative strategies rooted in community-based memory.

It has been truly inspiring to witness the creative power and intercultural dialogue these groups have brought into play. As they explored the potential of Artificial Intelligence in heritage storytelling, they also encountered its limitations: AI can support and accelerate workflows — but cannot replace human creativity, sensitivity, or the nuance required in prompt design. That message came through loud and clear.

Later in the day, students and staff took part in the European Researchers’ Night at the University of Pavia — where our wonderful host, Dr. Raffaella De Marco, presented her project MOEBHIOS to a wider audience. Another proud moment in a week full of discovery and connection.

A day full of ideas and inspiration at the VERY‑N Summer School!

We kicked off the day with a fascinating lecture by Prof. Piotr Stec from the University of Opole, who explored the intersection of heritage and ethics. His thought-provoking talk set the tone for an intense and productive working day.

Our students — organized in international, interdisciplinary teams — rolled up their sleeves and worked tirelessly on their AI-driven heritage projects. Alongside other faculty members, we had the chance to observe their collaborative process, offering guidance and feedback as needed.

Many teams stayed well into the evening, refining their concepts and pushing boundaries. We can’t wait to see the results of their creativity, commitment, and teamwork in the days to come!

A new day at Very-N Summer School in Pavia began with a walking tour through the city’s architectural heritage, led by our inspiring Dr. Raffaella De Marco.

We explored the Duomo di Pavia (Cathedral), originally begun in 1488 on the site of twin Romanesque churches (Santo Stefano and Santa Maria del Popolo). Its design shows influences from Donato Bramante and Leonardo da Vinci, and although construction spanned centuries, it remains a striking Renaissance landmark. 

Next, we visited the Basilica of San Michele Maggiore, an 11ᵗʰ–12ᵗʰ-century gem in the Lombard-Romanesque style. The basilica was once the setting for coronations of kings and emperors — including Frederick Barbarossa — and features a dramatic façade with sculptural decoration, as well as a cross-shaped plan with a prominent dome at the crossing. 

We also visited the Ponte Coperto over the Ticino River, tracing the line of a Roman bridge whose foundations once spanned this crossing. The modern covered bridge replaces earlier medieval versions, but the site remains a vivid reminder of Pavia’s riverine history. 

Finally, we visited Pavia’s ancient university buildings. The University of Pavia (Università degli Studi di Pavia), previously known as Alma Ticinensis, has roots tracing back to the medieval period and is among the oldest universities in continuous operation in Europe. 

In the afternoon, our students — grouped into international, interdisciplinary teams — resumed their collaborative work. They presented initial outlines of their AI-based heritage projects, each aiming to recast neglected architecture through community-based narratives. Their ideas promise to inspire new ways of seeing and valuing built memory.

Another Summer School Has Begun!

We are pleased to share that a new edition of the international summer school co-organized by the Chair for Heritage Studies at the European University Viadrina has just started at the University of Pavia.

After a series of insightful lectures from academic staff across the participating universities, students are now working together in international teams to explore the use of artificial intelligence in addressing challenges related to neglected architectural heritage. Their focus: developing community-oriented narratives and creative strategies to support and revalue lesser-known cultural sites.

The programme — titled VERY-N (Promotion and Digital Communication of Narratives on Neglected Architecture to Enhance Heritage Values from Community-Based Perspectives of Cultural Memory) — is part of the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme.

This year’s edition follows the successful 2023 format initiated by Dr. Raffaella De Marco and brings together students and staff from the following partner institutions:
