University College Freiburg (UCF) was founded in 2012 at the University of Freiburg and is situated in the historical buildings of the Alte Universität. UCF promotes and administers international, interdisciplinary teaching activities and houses high profile projects, like the Bachelor program in Liberal Arts and Sciences. The four-year Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) is an English-taught interdisciplinary undergraduate program.

🎉 We are happy to share that UCF alumna Martha “Millie“ Lemke won 1st place of the poster awards at the Interdisciplinary College (IK) spring school, sponsored by the German Cognitive Science Society.
This year’s IK theme “Bridging Realities of Brains, Language, and Technology” provided the perfect context for Millie to present her poster titled “When language shapes reality: Fight metaphors in immunology.” The poster is based on her bachelor thesis she wrote in 2025 – supervised by Dr. Simon Büchner and Prof. Dr. Susana Minguet – in the LAS Major Life Sciences.

✨ Alumni Spotlight: Elisa

From Culture & History to European Studies at UCL 🇪🇺

During her time in LAS Freiburg, Elisa explored everything from film studies to Roman history, while staying focused on her passion for the European Union.

Along the way, she got involved in EPICUR, worked as a student assistant, and gained journalism experience at FAZ and ARTE.

Today, she has completed her MA at UCL and reflects on how valuable an interdisciplinary education really is - especially in fast-paced, real-world settings.

💡 Her advice: Explore broadly, but don’t lose sight of what truly interests you.

🔬 Science at a new scale — in the lab and beyond

Rebecca, a Life Sciences major, spent 12 weeks conducting research at the University of Western Australia in Perth.

🧫 Her project focused on Expansion Microscopy, a technique that makes cells physically expand in a hydrogel — allowing researchers to visualise structures at a much higher resolution.

🎓 The internship was accredited as part of her senior profile and directly supported her bachelor’s thesis work.

🌊 Outside the lab, Rebecca enjoyed life in international student housing, built strong connections with fellow researchers, and explored Perth’s beaches, nature reserves, and the Swan River.

💬 “Overall, I really enjoyed my time in Perth, and I personally grew in many aspects as a result.”
