Maria Besiou, Professor of Humanitarian Logistics and Academic Director of the Center for Humanitarian Logistics and Regional Development (CHORD), has received KLU’s Teaching Innovation Award.
Her innovative teaching concept uses an immersive virtual humanitarian disaster simulation to place students in complex, high-pressure decision-making situations.
For Maria Besiou, learning goes beyond finding the “right” answer. It is also about reflecting on emotions, teamwork, and mistakes: “I want students to ask not only, ‘Did we make the right decision?’ but also, ‘How did I behave under pressure? Did I listen to others? What did I miss? Why did I react the way I did?’ If students leave a class and also know a little more about themselves, that is when teaching becomes powerful”.

Congratulations to Prof. Dr. Hanno Friedrich and Dr. Nils Roemer on receiving KLU’s Best Teacher and Best External Lecturer Awards, respectively! 🎉
Prof. Dr. Hanno Friedrich, Associate Professor of Freight Transportation, received the Best Teacher Award for faculty members, while the Best External Lecturer Award went to Dr. Nils Roemer, co-founder of a software company specializing in the digitalization and automation of supply chains.
For Hanno Friedrich, one of the most important aspects of teaching is conveying both passion for the subject and its relevance.
Nils Roemer, meanwhile, emphasizes the importance of inspiring students to look at concepts from different perspectives and approach them in new ways.
Congratulations to Dr. Kiran Rouven Busch on receiving this year’s KLU Best Dissertation Award!
His doctoral research on improving process management through modern AI methods was recognized with a €1,000 prize, initiated by the Dr. Friedrich Jungheinrich-Stiftung.
In his dissertation, “Machine Learning for Intelligent Business Process Management: Resource Allocation, Anomaly Detection, and Remaining Time Prediction,” Kiran Busch explores how large language models (LLMs) and reinforcement learning can be used to analyze and improve business processes.
