Yesterday we met with our late arrivals—international students who started the semester a bit later—and provided them with important information about starting their studies. We wrapped up the meeting with a relaxing picnic outside on the lawn in beautiful weather. We wish you all a great start to your studies and look forward to seeing you at future events!

Congratulations to the ten international students who were awarded a HAW Hamburg Deutschlandstipendium 2026-27! 🎉

On 21. April 2026 72 HAW Hamburg students received their certificates as part of a special scholarship ceremony and networking event with the HAW Hamburg President and representatives of the companies who sponsor this programme. They will receive 300 Euros per month for one year.

🌍 The six bachelor and four master international students represent seven countries: Afghanistan, Albania, China, Egypt, Nepal, Russia and Serbia. They study engineering, life sciences, business and design.

Sofija Stojanovic, Serbia – BSc International Business (photo 2):
“I have always strived to do more, whether through academic performance, volunteering, or taking on projects that go beyond the classroom. I genuinely enjoy pushing myself, and this scholarship feels like a recognition of that consistent effort and curiosity. Being selected means a great deal to me, it is a reminder that dedication and initiative truly matter, and that fuels me to keep setting higher goals for myself. I am especially grateful to the Karl Heinz Ditze Stiftung for being my sponsor and for investing in students who are eager to make the most of every opportunity.”

Somaya Ahmadian, Afghanistan – MSc Renewable Energy Systems (photo 4):
"The Deutschlandstipendium allows me to focus more fully on my studies by easing financial pressure. Beyond that, it is a meaningful source of motivation and recognition for my efforts. I’m deeply grateful that dedication is seen and supported in Germany through a programme like this and to my sponsor, Zonta Club Hamburg Hanse e.V. in particular for their financial support. It also inspires me to hope that one day I will be able to support others in their educational journeys."

❤️The month of May is traditionally connected with love, so how lovely that we have a new “Happiness made at HAW Hamburg” story to share: Benjamin (USA) and Miriam (Germany). ❤️

Benjamin and Miriam met back in February 2023, while Benjamin was completing a study and internship year at HAW Hamburg as part of our exchange programme with Drexel University. Miriam was in the middle of her studies in medicine at Hamburg University. They quickly realized that they shared a similar sense of humour and lifestyles and goals. During the summer semester 2023 they made the most of their time together and also met each other’s families and tasted the culinary delights of their different heritages of Ghana, Germany and Turkey.

When Benjamin returned to the US to complete his final year at Drexel they both worked hard to make the relationship work over the long distance and time difference with daily calls. Miriam visited Benjamin in the US for three months and Benjamin spent two months in Germany after graduation and before he started work as an electrical power systems engineer. And in between they had trips to other cities in Europe and the US.

And it was during a recent trip to London that they got engaged. With rings that Miriam had designed. Congratulations! 🎉So, what’s next? Miriam graduated in November and is now working as a first-year urologist at the MARTINI clinic in Hamburg. And Benjamin, whose plan was always to do a master’s degree, has applied to study in Germany. The programme he is hoping for most is a place on the Renewable Energy Systems programme at HAW Hamburg. Fingers crossed!

Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. To be honest, they knew it was coming, as Benjamin wrote: “Back in 2023, I showed Miriam the insta-takeover I did for HAW. That's when she saw the couple's posts. Since then, we have joked about this very thing happening, so it was really hilarious when I received your message after my insta-post about our engagement😂. Miriam's words were, "How fast is she???"😂😂😂. So, you made our day with that.”

😂So glad we did. Wishing you every happiness together!
