Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712–1778) was a Swiss-born philosopher, writer, and composer, whose works influenced the Enlightenment in Europe and the French Revolution. His ideas on education, freedom, and human nature are explored in writings such as “On The Social Contract” and “Emile, or On Education.”

Fruits & veggies are tasty and healthy at the same time!

Ever wondered how they are called in our different languages? Then learn these fruit and vegetable names to increase your vocabulary:

English: fig / figs

French: la figue / les figues

Spanish: el higo / los higos

Italian: il fico / i fichi

One fun fact about figs: Figtrees have no blossoms on their branches. The blossom, is inside of the fruit. Figs are therefore flowers inside out!

Ever wondered how they are called in our different languages? Then learn these fruit and vegetable names to increase your vocabulary:

English: strawberry / strawberries

French: la fraise / les fraises

Spanish: la fresa / las fresas

Italian: la fragola / le fragole

One fun fact about strawberries: Strawberries are technically receptacles (the thickened part of a stem) rather than berries. The little hard pieces that appear to be seeds on a strawberry are actually a type of dry fruit (called achene), that contain their own seeds!

William James (1842–1910) was an American philosopher and psychologist, often referred to as the “Father of American Psychology.” A leading thinker in pragmatism, James explored the connections between belief, action, and experience in shaping human life. His works, such as “The Principles of Psychology,” remain influential in both philosophy and psychology.

Joseph Addison (1672–1719) was an English essayist, poet, and politician, known for his influential role in 18th-century literary culture. Co-founder of the English daily publication “The Spectator,” Addison’s essays emphasized morality, wit, and the joys of intellectual and social engagement.

If you need to take a TOEFL exam but are not quite sure where to go, we are here to help!

You’ve got two options to choose from:
You can take the test…

… from the comfort of your own home with the TOEFL Home Edition privded by ETS

… at test centers in Hamburg (or other cities) that offer TOEFL test dates

And if you need a little help preparing for the test, there are lots of helpful resources out there, including various online options, both available for free or for a fee from the ETS website.

If you feel like you need a little extra support, don’t worry! The Language Center offers test preparation classes to help you prepare for the TOEFL exam.

Don’t forget: Today is “Christi Himmelfahrt” in Germany. Since this is a public holiday, our classes will be taking a break today.

Christi Himmelfahrt (known as Ascension Day in English) is a Christian holiday that commemorates the belief in the bodily Ascension of Jesus Christ into Heaven.

Ascension Day always falls on a Thursday, exactly 40 days after Easter (i.e., 39 days after Easter Sunday). Some Christian denominations, however, have moved the celebration to the following Sunday, which is then called Ascension Sunday.

In most English-speaking countries, Ascension Day is not a public holiday, but it is observed as a public holiday in Germany, France, and several other countries.

Nicht vergessen: Heute ist in Deutschland „Christi Himmelfahrt“. Da dies ein offizieller Feiertag ist, machen unsere Kurse heute eine Pause.

Christi Himmelfahrt ist ein christlicher Feiertag, der im christlichen Glauben die leibhaftige Himmelfahrt Jesu Christi feiert.

Traditionell wird Christi Himmelfahrt an einem Donnerstag, dem 40. Ostertag, also 39 Tage nach Ostersonntag, gefeiert. Einige christliche Konfessionen haben die Feierlichkeiten jedoch auf den folgenden Sonntag verlegt.

In den meisten englischsprachigen Ländern ist Christi Himmelfahrt kein gesetzlicher Feiertag. In Deutschland, Frankreich und mehreren anderen Ländern jedoch schon.
