The South Asia Institute is Europe’s leading center for South Asian Studies.

The South Asia Institute is Europe’s leading center for South Asian Studies with an active international research network and an outstanding library. As a central academic institution within Heidelberg University, the South Asia Institute today has seven professorships, namely Anthropology, Development Economics, Geography, History, Cultural and Religious History of South Asia (formerly Classical Indology), Modern South Asian Languages and Literatures (formerly Modern Indology) as well as Political Science. With our branch offices in several South Asian countries, and many visiting scholars from all over the world, we provide an environment for interdisciplinary applied learning and research.

SAl is pleased to welcome Dr. Shikhar Goel as Assistant Professor at the Department of Anthropology. He works as an anthropologist of law, media and technology with a focus on contemporary South Asia.

Dr. Goel finished his PhD with distinction in 2026 with his doctoral thesis titled Technical Mutations in the Kaghazi Raj (Paper State): Law in Digital India at the Department of Media, Culture and Communication at New York University (NYU). His work draws on more than two years of intensive multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork at law enforcement institutions, including police stations in semi-urban, Hindi-speaking districts of North India, state forensic science laboratories, trial courts adjudicating terror cases, and the Registry of the Supreme Court of India.

His research has been published in the Asian Journal of Law and Society, Studies in History, and Economics and Political Weekly. He is also a published Hindi poet, with poems appearing in anthologies, Hindi literary journals and online literary magazines.

The SAI, in cooperation with the Max Weber Forum for South Asian Studies Delhi, calls for applications for a (up to) three-month fellowship to be spent at the South Asia Institute, Heidelberg, in summer 2027. The fellowship is for young researchers from India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka or Bangladesh who wish to establish and develop a research collaboration with the SAI.

The fellowship is scheduled to begin between April and June 2027 and runs for a period of three months.

During the stay, a project previously defined in the application is to be taken up and developed into a third-party funding application. The application can be aimed at acquiring research funding as well as exchange or event programs.

The fellowship includes reimbursement of international travel expenses of up to EUR 1,500, payment of rental costs and a monthly scholarship instalment of EUR 1,200.

The application deadline is December 1, 2026, 23:59 CET and selection will take place by the end of the year 2026. You are requested to apply online via the application portal. We cannot consider applications sent by email.

The Department of Cultural and Religious History of South Asia recently hosted a lecture by Sophia Kaiser, PhD Fellow at the University of Potsdam, on 'Narrative Approach in Curating Nepali Portrait Painting'. The lecture explored how curation can serve as a methodological approach to research, focusing on how the selection, organisation, and interpretation of objects shape knowledge production and presentation.

Focusing on Nepali portrait painting, the presentation introduced two approaches to curation: genre-based curation and narrative curation. Drawing on different theoretical perspectives, it explored how a narrative approach can be used to select and interpret Nepali portrait paintings, revealing stories, cultural contexts, and historical relationships within these paintings. The lecture considered how curatorial choices influence the production and transfer of knowledge.

The presentation concluded by highlighting how narrative curation can deepen audience engagement and contribute to new understandings of portraiture.
