A standout moment for TUM Campus Heilbronn, all the way from Milan!🇮🇹
We already know that misinformation spreads faster than the truth. But what exactly is the role of language in driving this viral engagement? That is the exact question two of our Master’s students took all the way to one of Europe’s leading information systems conferences.
The short paper „Not Just Wrong, But Convincing,“ by our Master’s students Hamide Nur Tutuk and Batuhan Ayverdi , together with co-author and supervisor Batuhan Can and supervisor Dr. Sara Alida Volkmer, all at TUM School of Management, TUM Campus Heilbronn, was presented and published at the European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS) 2026, one of only 131 papers accepted out of 446 submissions.
What makes this especially remarkable is that contributions at a conference like ECIS often come from doctoral and postdoctoral researchers. This one began as a Master’s Project Study here on campus and grew into a peer-reviewed contribution that held its own among them. From a course on campus to the ECIS stage in Milan, a clear example of how research and teaching come together at TUM Campus Heilbronn.
Their answer to the question? Language does real work. Confident, certain phrasing and specific emotions, especially anger and disgust, are linked to higher engagement with misinformation on YouTube.
