Schubert Group The Schubert Group (Laboratory of Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry) is part of the the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, Germany.

The laboratory covers a range of research fields between organic synthesis, macromolecular chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, nano medicine, combinatorial material research as well as nanoscience. Significant support is obtained from the DFG, BMBF , State of Thuringia, EU, DPI, NWO, Evonik and the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie. The laboratory coordinates the DFG priority programme SPP 1568 “Des

ign and generic principles of self-healing materials”. Within the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, the laboratory coordinates the priority research area “Innovative Materials and Technologies” and the ProExcellence programmes ‘NanoConSens’ and ‘PhotoMic’; in addition, the laboratory actively participates in the BMBF "Spitzenforschung und Innovation in den Neuen Ländern" programme "Photonics in Nanomaterials" (PhoNa), the Abbe School of Photonics and the Abbe Center of Photonics (ACP). Currently about 70 members from 9 nations form the vibrant basis of an active research environment, which was documented in 60 refereed scientific publications in 2015; more than 3700 citations in 2015 demonstrate the worldwide impact of the research performed in the laboratory. The mission of the laboratory is to combine bottom-up and top-down approaches to functional materials from the nanoscopic to the mesoscopic length scale, combined with addressable (smart) features such as self-healing systems and responsive properties. Applications both in the field of photonics/optics as well as life science are currently targeted, in close cooperation with local partners in Jena as well as abroad.

🌏 AI4X Conference 2026 | Singapore

The Schubert Group was proud to be represented at the AI4X Conference 2026 in Singapore, where Prof. Dr. Ulrich S. Schubert delivered the opening plenary lecture.

The conference brought together more than 800 participants from academia and industry to discuss the latest developments in artificial intelligence, machine learning, automation, and autonomous research.

The presentation highlighted current research activities in data-driven polymer science, high-throughput experimentation, automated workflows, and AI-supported materials discovery carried out within the Schubert Group and its collaborative research network.

Many thanks to the organizers and all participants for the inspiring discussions and scientific exchange.

Schubert Group at Jenaer Teamlauf 2026 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️

„At the 2026 „Teamlauf“, three members of the Schubert Group successfully represented the University of Jena as part of the ‘Taskforce OC-Praktikum’ team.

The team, comprising Carolin Kellner, Dr. Uwe Köhn and Kristin Schreyer, achieved a solid mid-table finish.

They thus demonstrated strong team spirit even outside the day-to-day lab routine.

Schubert Group represented at Hannover Messe

Members of the Schubert Group took part in this year’s Hannover Messe, one of the world’s leading industrial trade fairs.

Philip Zimmer, Xhesilda Fataj, and Anubhav Kumar represented the group at the event, together with Moritz Kunze from HIPOLE Jena. Throughout the fair, they engaged with participants from academia and industry, gaining insights into current developments in materials science, energy technologies, and related fields.

A particular highlight was the Thuringia Day (“Thüringentag”), where regional research institutions, companies, and initiatives presented their activities. In this context, Prof. Dr. Ulrich S. Schubert was also present as a representative of Thuringia’s research landscape.

The Hannover Messe provided a valuable platform for exchange, enabling discussions on potential collaborations and offering perspectives on how research can contribute to future technological solutions.

Our Team at the analytica 2026

Members of the Schubert Group, Michael Ringleb, Silas Langstein, Aaron Rajkumar, Lars Flüggen, and Dr. Moritz Kleybolte, attended analytica 2026 in Munich to explore the latest advancements in laboratory technology. Four years after their first visit in 2022, the group members observed a significant industry shift toward the digitalization and automation of laboratories. They gained valuable insights from a variety of innovative exhibitors.

We’re returning to the office with high energy and plenty of new ideas to implement. Next stop: analytica 2028! 🚀
