The final day of the Summer School arrived faster than we could have imagined three weeks ago.
Three weeks full of impressions, travels, and hard work — including an unforgettable week on Ilha
do Combu. Today, we worked until the very last minute to prepare everything for the closing
celebration and vernissage. At 4 p.m., our guests arrived punctually, including the President of the
Federal University of Pará and Edmilson Rodrigues, the Mayor of Belém. After ceremonial
speeches, we proudly presented our work and celebrated the project’s completion. A delicious
buffet, caipirinhas, and joyful music set the scene, and we danced until we could dance no more,
before the last boat carried us back to the mainland.
On Saturday, we returned to the island one last time to reflect, reminisce, and say goodbye — to the island, our work, and each other. To new friends and a journey we will never forget.

The last working day on Ilha do Combu arrived faster than we expected, and — as with projects
like this — there was still plenty to do! While some frames were being finalized, others were
already being hung, giving us a first sense of how the final result would look. 🙂
As some students focused on finishing frames and starting the planting table, others used the
time to work on their journals — documenting the past weeks and getting them ready for
tomorrow. Most of us spent the Friday evening finalizing journals, postcards, and the newspaper
in preparation for the upcoming “vernissage.”

The penultimate day on Ilha do Combu was all about finishing and fine-tuning. We checked the
frames, made a few key decisions, and started the last ones. Teams were no longer fixed —
everyone pitched in wherever they were needed. Focus and energy were high as we pushed to
get everything ready. The evening brought a special highlight: the University of Belém organized a
trip to Mangueirão Stadium! We left the island a bit earlier to cheer for Remo in their match
against Criciúma. Even though the game ended 1–0 against our team, the night was full of fun,
laughter, and good vibes.

Halfway through our time on Ilha do Combu. The first frames are being completed,
while others still need adjustments or are just getting started. Today had it all: final touches, fresh
beginnings, and everything in between — and the mood reflected that. The pressure is rising, as
everything needs to be finished. A special highlight: two little monkeys paid us a visit,
reminding us that we’ve been working in — and with — nature for the past three days.

Work continued on Ilha do Combu, and the first key design decisions were made: there will be
eight rotating frames, each interpreting the theme of light and shadow in its own way. The frames
can be turned to open up the sides of the house completely, creating both flexibility and airflow.
Two larger frames will form the “hanging garden” at the front of the house, while another group
kept refining a solution for drying cacao beans. With each day, everyone grows more confident
using the tools — movements become smoother, teamwork more intuitive, and ideas slowly start
to take shape.

Our first „working day“ on Ilha do Combu! After developing initial ideas and concepts over the
weekend, today was all about getting hands-on: preparing workspaces, clearing the area, building
shade structures, unpacking tools — and starting to collect, saw, and drill. By the afternoon, small
teams had formed, each exploring ideas to make the house and its surroundings more practical
and comfortable for its owner: creating shaded areas that let light through but keep out the rain, a
smart setup for drying cacao beans, a planting table and hanging garden, and an efficient way to
do laundry. All built mainly from materials found on site — from different types of wood and leaves
to reused objects and bits of waste — while also drawing inspiration from local traditions and
culture.

In the morning we visited a house designed by — calm, open, and bright. A shop greets you at the entrance, then the space unfolds into an open area that opens to a lush garden. At its center, a secound level rises gently above the greenery — a place to pause, to gather, to breathe. You can feel Milton Monte’s influence here: the respect for air, light, and community. But Raiol’s voice is his own — warm, local, and quietly modern.

We spent the day exploring one of Milton Monte’s houses — a quiet masterpiece hidden among the trees. What struck us first wasn’t its form, but its intelligence. The entire structure seems to breathe with the climate.

Deep eaves cast shifting shadows that keep the interiors cool. Wooden louvers open wide, inviting the wind to flow through. The double ceilings create a gentle cushion of air, reducing heat — a lesson in thermal comfort drawn straight from the forest.

Monte called it the Arquitetura do Barracão: a reinterpretation of the vernacular sheds and indigenous houses he grew up seeing in Acre. The inverted “V” roof, inspired both by Japanese modernists and the barracão seringalista, allows rain to escape quickly and light to enter softly. Every gesture in the design feels both technical and poetic — a conversation between structure and nature.

To Monte, architecture wasn’t about style, but belonging. Here, modernism meets memory, and the forest becomes the first teacher.

Today we crossed over to Ilha do Combu again. Our goal is to explore how we
can bring in our skills to support and improve it. This visit was about getting to know the
place, the people, and each other, while also settling into the working environment. An inspiring
afternoon full of impressions and first ideas — leaving us excited for the days ahead.

In Belém we finally met the students and Professor from the local university , and reconnected with Professor , whom we had first encountered back in Konstanz. He welcomed us into one of his buildings, explaining its design, before we let ourselves drift through the lively streets, visiting the market and the fish market with all their colors and sounds. The evening brought a special highlight: thanks to , we were able to attend a concert in the city’s impressive opera house — a night of extraordinary music in a truly remarkable setting.
