Das Archiv ist eine Sammelstelle von Nachlässen und Materialien, zugleich eine Forschungseinrichtung, die Forschungsarbeiten durchführt und organisiert.

Die Tätigkeit des Sozialwissenschaftlichen Archivs Konstanz wird von zwei Aufgaben bestimmt: Einerseits ist das Archiv eine Sammelstelle von Nachlässen und Materialien und andererseits zugleich eine Forschungseinrichtung, die mit diesen Materialien thematisch verbundene Forschungsarbeiten organisiert und durchführt. Das Archiv ist bemüht, die Nachlässe emigrierter deutschsprachiger Sozialwissensch

aftler im Original oder in Kopie zu erwerben, um theoriegeschichtlich wichtige Ideenwanderungen festzuhalten. Den Grundstock dieser Sammlung bilden Nachlässe aus dem Kreis um die New School for Social Research in New York. Seit seiner Entstehung konzentriert das Archiv die Forschungen auf vier thematische Bereiche:

1. Beiträge zur Ideen- und Dogmengeschichte der Sozialwissenschaften

2. Erforschung der sozialwissenschaftlichen Emigration nach 1933s

3. Rekonstruktion und Ausarbeitung zentraler Konzepte der soziologischen Handlungstheorie

4. Forschungsprojekte und Kolloquien
