American Studies Leipzig

American Studies Leipzig The Institute for American Studies at the University of Leipzig is the fastest growing institute for American Studies in Germany (outside of Berlin).

Founded in 1993, the Institute for American Studies at Leipzig pursues interdisciplinary knowledge about the United States with scholars specializing in literature, cultural studies, language, history, politics, and contemporary affairs. American Studies at Leipzig has a long and distinguished tradition reaching back to the 19th Century. American Studies at Leipzig builds on the great traditions o

f European and German universities to prepare students for global engagement and international careers. In this spirit, we pursue four interrelated goals:
- to encourage knowledge and expertise about a critical region in world affairs
- to explore transatlantic cultural differences to help students understand and become fluent in the dynamics of American culture and life
- to empower students to acquire essential international skills for today's globalizing employment markets
- to engage the broader community in dialog about the many facets of American life. American Studies Leipzig offers a BA, MA, and PhD program, all in English.

ASL Welcomes Olaf Stieglitz as New Professor for American Cultural History!

American Studies Leipzig is delighted to announce that Olaf Stieglitz has assumed the position of Professor for American Cultural History at the institute. During the past five semesters, he had already been teaching as a visiting professor, but starting this July, he will be permanently teaching and researching at Leipzig University as the successor to Prof. Crister S. Garrett.

Olaf Stieglitz received his PhD from the University of Hamburg by writing a gender history of the Civilian Conservation Corps, while his habilitation, written at the University of Cologne, analyzed the cultural relevance of denunciations in American history. Before coming to Leipzig, he taught North American Cultural History at the Universities of Cologne, Münster, Erfurt, Hamburg, Bremen, and at the Free University of Berlin; he also spent one academic year at Florida State University in Tallahassee.

His teaching and researching activities cover a wide range of topics and interests in US social and cultural history, but he is a particular expert in gender history and the history of the body, sports history as cultural history, visual studies (film and photography), and political cultures of loyalty. He is currently working on a project named ‘Modernity in Motion – Visualizing Athletic Bodies, 1890s to 1930s.’

The faculty and staff at ASL very much look forward to continuing to work with Olaf Stieglitz in the future. For information on his upcoming classes in the winter term and any other kinds of activities, please keep checking back.

Attention all 2021 ASL Graduates!

ASLAA e.V. is proud to announce that this year’s Graduation Ceremony will take place online on 9 July 2021 at 5PM!

As the pandemic still makes planning an in-person graduation impossible for this year, we have switched to an online version that will not lack in celebratory atmosphere.

Broadcasted from the University’s Center for Media and Communication, the event will include interactive features, music, as well as several speeches. In addition, names of this year’s participating graduates (if they so choose) will be read out as they receive their virtual applause and farewell from the American Studies Institute and move their tassel from left to right.

To make the celebration at home more fun, all participating graduates will receive a graduation package with ASLAA e.V.’s Certificate of Achievement, information resources, goodies (e.g. graduation hat, confetti), as well as a few surprises free of charge. Registration is now open until 25 June 2021!

We hope to (virtually) see you there!

All Graduates, please register here: https://www.aslaa.de/GRADUATION-2021/

Have a friend that is graduating this year? Let them know and spread the word!
