The Museum Island Hombroich will host the one-off Summer in the Labyrinth
takes place. The labyrinth is the largest walk-in sculpture by Erwin
Heerich. After more than three years of renovation, the labyrinth can be
in its pure, sculptural form. Over the summer, ephemeral
ephemeral artistic contributions enliven the building.

The two Japanese artists Tomoko Mukai and Sachiko Nagata
present their work ‘Kiwa’. The spatial staging by Tomoko
will be intensified over two weekends by a Hamon percussion performance by
performance by Sachiko.

How do we situate ourselves in nature? Isn’t nature always also a human construction? These questions are particularly relevant in the artificial idyll of Museum Insel Hombroich. The Kiwa Project by Tomoko Mukai explores the relationship between human-made environments and nature, creating an immersive experiential environment within the Labyrinth. On two weekends, there will be a performance by the percussionist Sachiko Nagata.

Performances: Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 2 pm, the artist will be present.

Sound artists from Mainz at Kunsthaus Wiesbaden

Roehr - Sounds like ...? Looks like ...?
The Kunsthaus pays tribute to the artist Peter Roehr - one of the first representatives of Minimal Art in Germany - with a special homage from 15 September to 11 November.

The renowned artist Peter Roehr died in 1968 at the age of just 24. Despite his short creative period, he left behind a large body of work and is now internationally recognised as one of the first representatives of Minimal Art in Germany, a photographic artist of Pop Art and a pioneer of Conceptual Art in the 1970s.

Born in 1944, the artist attended the Wiesbaden Werkkunstschule - home of today's Kunsthaus Wiesbaden. Peter Roehr would have been 80 years old in 2024. To mark the occasion, the Kunsthaus is honouring this artist with a special tribute.

Five international sound artists - Danbi Jeung, Kyungseo Min, Juan David Bermúdez, Wingel Mendoza and Leon Senger, all alumni or students of the Sound Art Composition class at the Mainz University of Music - have explored Peter Roehr and his working methods for the first time. Works have been created especially for this exhibition, which are in dynamic dialogue with a selection of serial montages by Peter Roehr. A multifaceted supporting programme accompanies the exhibition.

At 4 pm, Monique Behr, Director of the Kunsthaus, will welcome you. Dr Julia Cloot, Deputy Managing Director of Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain, and Nadine Hahn-Rübel, Archive Peter Roehr at MMK Frankfurt am Main, and Wolfgang Schliemann, curator, will introduce the exhibition.

"ATEMRAUM" - Exhibition and teaching project on the relationship between breath, mediality and perception in the arts and curatorial mediation

In the summer semester 2024, a curatorial teaching and exhibition project at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) dealt with the topic of "Breath / Space". The focus was on the concept of the breathing space, coined by Swiss curator Harald Szeemann as a metaphor for his exhibition practice in the 1970s and 1980s: According to Szeemann, a work of art has sufficient breathing space when the curator finds the appropriate relationship to the space, to other exhibits and to the visitors in an exhibition. Accordingly, the interdisciplinary project seminar at JGU dealt with the question of how breath can be thematised as an ecological category in the various arts and how "breathing spaces" can be created as intermediate spaces and places of aesthetic negotiation processes in an exhibition or performative presentation. As an innovative teaching project funded by the Gutenberg Teaching College (GLK), students of art history, fine arts, music and musicology have been working together with artists in recent weeks on various projects and their presentation, which can be seen from 26 June to 3 July 2024 at the Schule des Sehens on the Gutenberg campus.

Cistifellea Collective: Codes of Absence in Berlin mit Nicolas Cristancho
Concertperformance Do. 13.06.24 in VIERTE WELT, Berlin

Codes of Absence takes us with musician Nico Yurgaki* to trace, throughout musical improvisations, his experiences of loneliness during the migration from Colombia into the EU, and how it affected his relationship with his mother Bertha Quintero. Quintero is a conga player and one of the founders of the first female salsa orchestra in Colombia, Caña Brava.

In a live video call, Yurgaki will be on stage at the Vierte Welt and Quintero in Bogotà. Together they will take us on a journey along the concept of the five claves (rhythmic codes) of Colombian-Pacific and Caribbean music. These five codes are rhythmic patterns that appear in many Colombian musical pieces. As the result of the centuries-long interweaving of different musical cultures in the Latin- Afro-American, and Caribbean regions, they will use them to guide us through intimate conversations discussing themes such as motherhood, rebellion against the patriarchy, masculinity, love – and the feeling of the absence of the loved ones in a seemingly globally connected world. Hence it turns these patterns into a symbol for the transition of identity- and its transgression.

NOISESTADT versteht sich als Forum für Klangkunst. Im Rahmen der Klangkunsttage werden an zwei Wochenden Ende April/Anfang Mai in den Räumlichkeiten der KULTURBÄCKEREI in der Mainzer Neustadt Installationen von Studierenden und Alumnis der Klasse Klangkunst-Komposition an der Hochschule für Musik in Mainz präsentiert. Außerdem ist Stefan Fricke mit dabei. Es sind klingende künstlerische Objekte und mediale Installationen entstanden, die auf die verschiedenen Orte reagieren und diese zu speziellen Erfahrungsräumen verwandeln: eine Noisestadt in der Neustadt.
Bei der Vernissage am 26.4. werden auch Live-Klänge zu hören sein:

Für ein Wochenende wird der Konzertraum des art.ist mit einer Klanginstallation aus vielfältigen skulpturalen Elementen gefüllt. Im Zerfall begriffene alte Lautsprecher entfalten dabei ihr kreatives Potenzial. Statt der getreuen Wiedergabe von komponiertem Klangmaterial, rückt ihre eigene Materialität in den Vordergrund. Es entsteht ein die Besuchenden umhüllender Raum aus sensiblen Klängen, der jedoch auch immer wieder von einem lärmenden Sich-Aufbäumen durchschnitten wird.

Diese Ausstellung ist Teil einer Master-Arbeit der Klasse für Klangkunst-Komposition von Prof. Peter Kiefer an der Hochschule für Musik Mainz.

Dear Sir or Madam
An eventful year is coming to an end in our ARS_art-research_sound project, which was among other things dedicated to researching the sonic aspects of mantras in Tibetan Buddhism. A research trip lasting several weeks in spring 2023 led to various Buddhist monasteries in India, including the Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim and the Dalai Lama's deep-throated chanting monks in the Gyuto Ta***ic Monastery.
After six years, funding for ARS_art-research_sound from the Gutenberg Research College comes to an end at the end of this year. We have had an exciting time: we have held exhibitions with Jacob Kirkegaard, Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Bernhard Leitner, Peter Kiefer and Miya Masaoka at the Hochschule für Musik Mainz and the Schule des Sehens, published the volume Exhibiting Sound Art with Wolke Verlag, organised symposia, taken part in meetings and conferences in Germany and abroad (including Columbia University NY), realised major exhibition projects in Germany and promoted sound research in a wide variety of areas.

Although funding from the Gutenberg Research College has come to an end, our scientific and artistic endeavours have not: in the new year, we will be presenting the results of our projects in a series of exciting and informative podcasts with interesting experts as part of our series The World of Sound.

We would like to thank you for your continued interest in sound research and sound art and for the excellent collaboration over the past few years.

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year of sound!

PS: the picture shows an old bell in the vestibule of Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim, which was opened by the 16th Karmapa in 1966. The bell comes from the historical Rumtek Monastery (founded in the 16th century) in Tibet.

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,

ein ereignisreiches Jahr geht in unserem Projekt ARS_art-research_sound zu Ende, das u.a. der Erforschung der klanglichen Aspekte von Mantras im tibetischen Buddhismus gewidmet war. So führte eine mehrwöchige Forschungsreise im Frühjahr 2023 in verschiedene buddhistische Klöster in Indien, darunter nach Sikkim in das Kloster Rumtek sowie zu den Tiefkehlgesang-Mönchen des Dalai Lama im Gyuto Ta***ic Monastery.
Nach sechs Jahren läuft die Förderung für ARS_art-research_sound durch das Gutenberg Forschungskolleg am Ende diesen Jahres aus. Hinter uns liegt eine spannende Zeit: Wir haben Ausstellungen u.a. mit Jacob Kirkegaard, Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Bernhard Leitner, Peter Kiefer und Miya Masaoka in der Hochschule für Musik Mainz und der Schule des Sehens gemacht, den Band Exhibiting Sound Art im Wolke Verlag herausgegeben, Symposien veranstaltet, an Tagungen und Konferenzen im In- und Ausland (u.a. Columbia University NY) teilgenommen, große Ausstellungsprojekte in Deutschland realisiert und die Klangforschung in verschiedensten Bereichen vorangetrieben.

Zwar hört die Förderung durch das Gutenberg Forschungskolleg auf, unsere wissenschaftlichen und künstlerischen Vorhaben aber nicht: Im neuen Jahr werden wir u.a. im Rahmen unserer Reihe Die Welt der Klänge Ergebnisse unserer Projekts im Rahmen kurzweiliger und informativer Podcasts mit interessanten Expertinnen und Experten vorstellen.

Uns bleibt, Ihnen für Ihr fortwährendes Interesse an der Klangforschung und der Klangkunst und die gute Zusammenarbeit in den vergangenen Jahren zu danken.

Wir wünschen Ihnen ein frohes Weihnachtsfest und ein glückliches neues Jahr der Klänge!
