Favourite things in Mainz and nearby?
This is my third post about experiences in Mainz while studying as an exchange student. First two posts can be found and read here as well. While living in Mainz, I have noticed that the location is excellent. You can get to other countries and cities quickly from here. It is also thanks to the closeness of Frankfurt that has amazing connections by trains and airplanes. Students from JGU can use semester ticket when travelling by train and so going to Frankfurt costs nothing when you are a student here. Mainz is located next to the Rhein River and along the Rhein you can find some gorgeous hiking trails. My personal favourites are located at Middle Rhein valley. JGU also has a hiking group that organizes hikes if you are into that sort of thing. On the weekends you can find different events to look out for. This summer’s favourites have been Johannisfest, a three-day festival celebrating Johannes Gutenberg, Bierbörse, a beer festival and Rhein in Flammen. Feels like every weekend there is some event either in Mainz or close by. Last thing I want to mention is all the vineyards close to Mainz. In only some minutes from the centre of Mainz you can reach the wine fields with beautiful hills and scenery. Usually, vineyards are also close to the Rhein River, so the views are really great. Mainz is called the “Wine capital of Germany” and it is easy to see why, when coming here. There is plenty of other things to do in Mainz as well, but these are some of my favourites. Here’s some pictures. First one is from a hike near Bacharach, second one is from a music concert in Mainz in July, third one is from a skyscraper in Frankfurt and the last one is from a vineyard in Bingen, really close to Mainz.
