Maximiliane Baumgartner is the new professor for painting.
Maximiliane Baumgartner has been appointed to a professorship for painting at the Academy of Fine Arts, Mainz. From 2023 to 2025, she was a visiting professor at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Prior to that, she held teaching positions at the ZHdK (Zurich, Switzerland), as well as at the Laboratory for Art and Research at the University of Cologne and the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, among others.
In her interest in urban contexts and their critical historical relations as well as the concept of the public sphere therein, she develops artistic action spaces and research-related series of paintings. Through painting, which she regards as an expanded field, she seeks to record urban, historical, and social processes while envisioning spaces of possibility for alternative historiographies and situated knowledge.
Her works have been shown in solo exhibitions, such as at the Kunstverein für Rheinlande und Westfalen in Düsseldorf (2026), the Kirchgasse Gallery, CH (2025), n.b.k. Berlin (2025), the Kunstverein Nürnberg (2024), the Kunstverein München (2021), the Neuer Essener Kunstverein (2019), and the Stadtgalerie Bern, CH (2019), as well as in group exhibitions, including Overbeckgesellschaft in Lübeck (2026), the Surmondt-Ludwig-Museum in Aachen (2026), the Kunstmuseum Bochum (2023), Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw (2022), NS Documentation Center, Munich (2022), and Galerie kaufmann repetto, Milan / New York (2021), as well as in urban public spaces and in self-organized contexts. Her work is repesented by Galerie Max Mayer (Berlin).
She initiated and programmed the art project "Der Fahrende Raum" in changing collaborations in Munich from 2015 to 2019. In 2023, she realised "Das Sprechende Eck" in the context of Urbane Künste Ruhr. This mobile architecture for situated knowledge production and research based forms of action and play, which adresses children, young people and adults across generations, is activated by her in changing collaborations and at different locations.
