How can we teach AI and sustainability in a way that prepares students for real-world challenges?

📚 Our new book chapter "Interdisciplinary AI and Sustainability Education: Fostering 21st Century Skills through Challenge-Based Learning" grapples with exactly that question and presents our evaluation of our teaching approach.

Our collaborative research and teaching project sustAInability, brought interdisciplinary students and partners from the public sector, businesses, non-profits, and start-ups together to find innovative solutions for challenges at the intersection of AI and sustainability 🌱🤖

We are happy to share our findings in this book chapter and welcome questions, feedback, and opportunities for exchange.

Recap: 5 Teams, 5 solutions to real world challenges at the intersection of social sustainability and AI 🌱

On June 19, 2026, interdisciplinary students from Technische Universität München and Hochschule München MUC.DAI presented their innovative solutions in a public pitch event 🚀

In one intensive workshop week, students developed

🗺️An atlas mapping injustices linked to AI and its resource and labour exploration
👵A concept connecting students with senior citizens, enabling intergenerational support for digital tasks
⚖️ An AI based solution supporting students with legal challenges
🗣️ Strategies to get more people involved in digital democracy
🏙️ A digital twin concept to support citizens with administrative challenges

Since its launch in summer 2023, more than 200 students have participated in this seminar. While this was the final seminar within the current funding scheme, we hope it is not the end of the journey. We look forward to seeing the sustAInability community continue to grow and inspire future collaborations at the intersection of AI and social sustainability 🌷

On June 19th at 14:00h, students from Technische Universität München and Hochschule München will take the stage to present their innovative solutions at the intersection of social sustainability and AI. This event marks the culmination of an intensive workshop week 🚀

Challenges contributed by München.Digital - IT-Referat der Landeshauptstadt München Deutsches Forum für Ethisches Maschinelles Entscheiden Nexus Politics für den Stadtteil AU-Haidhausen reflect real-world issues.

Interdisciplinary student teams have worked hands-on to develop forward-thinking solutions.

Expect inspiring pitches, thought-provoking ideas, and real impact.

The event wraps up with a networking session and refreshments a chance to connect, share, and reflect on social sustainability and AI.

🚦 PROJECT WEEK RECAP: Future Mobility in Action 🌱🤖

From May 17–23, over 30 students joined forces in an intensive Project Week as part of the sustAInability course by TUM & HM, tackling real urban mobility challenges with AI-driven, sustainable solutions.

🔥 A total of 10 groundbreaking projects emerged—each of the five challenges was approached by two independent teams, doubling the diversity of ideas and creativity on display!

🚀 The week culminated in a dynamic Pitch Event on May 23, where students presented their forward-thinking ideas to experts from cities, mobility think tanks, and academia.

One stage. Real challenges. Real impact.

💡So were the solutions:

1️⃣ MCube – “My Street of Tomorrow”
An AI-powered tool visualizing how your street could transform with fewer cars, more greenery, and vibrant community life.

2️⃣ City of Munich – “Changing Mobility Behaviour”
Personalized digital consulting tools empowering citizens—from newcomers to families—to choose greener, smarter transport options.

3️⃣ City of Fürth – “Luisentunnel Fürth”
A participatory design thinking approach creating an inclusive, barrier-free, and welcoming pedestrian underpass.

4️⃣ City of Kempten – “Inner-City Traffic Reorganization”
Data-driven strategies to rethink car traffic, enhancing quality of life and economic vitality.

5️⃣ City of Fürstenfeldbruck – “Traffic Calming & Sustainability”
Tools measuring the impact of traffic calming on safety, air quality, and community wellbeing—starting with Schöngeisinger Street.

💬 One week. Five challenges. Ten projects. Infinite ideas.
Students didn’t just envision the future of mobility—they prototyped it.

The second lecture is already on Thursday! 🚲 🚅 🚗

🗓 November 11th, 4:45pm -6:15pm!

This time, four presentations will introduce different fields around concepts. Topics such as , for mobility or and the potentials, but also the challenges for sustainable mobility will be discussed together with our participants Birgit Heinke from acatech - Deutsche Akademie der Technikwissenschaften, Nils Heller from Bitkom, Tilman Vahle from SYSTEMIQ and Malte Schmeck from EmobilBW.
