The material science research group of the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich investigates and develops modern and esthetic restoration materials in the field of removable and fixed dental prostheses.

The surface properties of dental materials play an important role in their interaction with the oral environment. 🦷
In our latest article in DKW, we investigate how different manufacturing methods affect surface roughness, wettability, interfacial tension, and multi-species biofilm formation on dental materials. 🔬📊
Our findings provide insights into how material properties may influence bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation.

🔬 Specimen Fixation

For the further processing and preparation of our specimens, we use a two-component, addition-curing silicone material. 🧪
The two components are automatically mixed through a mixing tip and applied to fix our specimens. 🔄🦷
This provides a stable fixation while allowing efficient handling during subsequent preparation steps. ⚙️✨

🔬 IndiCoat – Setting the Next Milestones Together!
Today, we had the pleasure of visiting in Hilzingen for a project meeting as part of our ZIM cooperation project IndiCoat, together with Lignocolor, TUM, and our WSK team.
The meeting provided a great opportunity to discuss the current project status, share our latest results, and define the next steps. Together, we were able to set new milestones and develop valuable ideas for the next phase of the project. 💡🔬
This kind of personal and interdisciplinary exchange is what makes collaborative research so valuable—bringing together different perspectives, expertise, and ideas to move our joint research forward.
A heartfelt thank you to the Renfert team for the very warm welcome and wonderful hospitality! We are looking forward to the next steps and to continuing our exciting collaboration within the IndiCoat project. 💚🤝

🔬 Embedding specimens

🧪⚙️ For the preparation of our specimens, we use SCANDIQUICK -DIA a fast-curing powder/liquid cold mounting system for materialographic sample preparation.

✨🔍 The embedding securely fixes and stabilizes the specimens, providing a reliable basis for grinding, polishing and subsequent material characterization.
A well-prepared specimen is essential for precise results in microscopy and material analysis. 📊

💚 Saying Goodbye After 6.5 Incredible Years – All the Best, Moritz!
After 6.5 years together, it is time to say goodbye: Moritz is leaving the WSK team and starting a new chapter in his journey.
So much has happened during these years: from completing his Master’s thesis and doctoral degree to contributing to numerous funded research and industry projects and many scientific publications. With his dedication, scientific curiosity, and countless ideas, Moritz has truly shaped and enriched our team. 🔬📚
But in the end, it is not only the projects, publications, and scientific achievements that we will remember. It is above all the many moments we shared—the teamwork, the conversations, the laughter, and all the memories we created along the way.
Dear Moritz, we are incredibly grateful for every single one of these moments. It has been an intense, successful, and, most importantly, wonderful time together. We will truly miss you, both as a colleague and as a person. 💚
