In our previous post, we showed you how to get access to the electronic media through the Paderborn University Library. Apart from the catalog, the library also offers E-books, E-course reserves and more such as the EZB, DBIS and digital collections.

The EZB (Elektronische Zeitschriftenbibliothek or Electronic Journals Library) is a service provided by the University Library for the fast, structured and uniform access of scientific full-text journals. The EZB contains more than 50,000 scientific electronic full-text journals which are subscribed by UPB and also freely available on the internet. For more information, visit https://ezb.uni-regensburg.de/ezeit/index.phtml?bibid=UBPB&colors=7&lang=en

The DBIS (Database Information System) is a cooperative service for the use of scientific databases involving 358 libraries. Databases listed in the DBIS are sorted by subject and can be searched through in a targeted manner using a search function with keywords, geographical reference, etc. The DBIS contains a huge amount of database types including reference books, dictionaries, dissertation directories, image databases, etc. For further details, visit https://dbis.ur.de/index.php?bib_id=ub_pb&colors=31&ocolors=40&ref=hinweis

Digital collections contain the open access publications published using the publication service of the university, digital copies of books and journals held by the UPB library or cooperating libraries.
The digital collections can be found here: https://digital.ub.uni-paderborn.de/

A huge amount of the electronic information media available on the internet are chargeable for a fee making it really difficult for students to get all available information regarding their research.

However, the University of Paderborn makes it easier for us by subscribing to the electronic information media. We as students of the university are authorized to access it for free in most cases. There are several ways to access the electronic information media.

The access authorization to licensed e-books, e-journals, databases is usually checked using the IP address which indicates if you are connected to the uni network.

* The easiest way to get access is using Eduroam (WLAN network for University of Paderborn) from the campus
* It is also possible to access the media on the library computers
* A VPN enables you to access the university network from anywhere around the globe

Another way to access the information without being on the university network is

* The Shibboleth which is a web-based authentication provides access using a single sign-on process directly at the publishers website (for example IEEE digital library)

Detailed information can be found at https://www.ub.uni-paderborn.de/en/recherche/hinweise-zur-nutzung-der-elektronischen-angebote/electronic-resources-in-remote-access

Now that we know how to access the media, let's see what information is available in our next post. Stay tuned for more!

Programming is an integral part of engineering studies as well as a desirable skill for employers. C++ is one of the most elegant, powerful and versatile programming languages which can be used to develop games, operating systems, embedded systems, and much more! It is used by many companies like Microsoft, Facebook, BMW, SAP, etc.

For an ESE student, knowledge of C++ can prove to be a handy tool while dealing with programming tasks in projects, exercises and most importantly while looking for jobs.

Would you like to start coding in C++ but do not know where to begin? The Secure Software Engineering group provides with a course for C++ programming. For more information and course content, check out https://www.hni.uni-paderborn.de/sse/lehre/cppp/

Continuing our previous post covering the basic library usage...

Renewal:
Your library account can be used to extend your loans if you need the borrowed media for longer than 30 days. Note that a renewal is not possible if the item has been reserved.

Reminders:
You will recieve 2 reminders by email (the IMT email for students) before the loan period expires. However, it is suggested to regularly check your library account for deadlines.

Return:
The books borrowed on the self-issuing machines can be returned in the book sorter whereas the books collected from the circulation desk should be returned there. In exceptional cases, the books can also be returned by post.

Overdues:
If you return your borrowed items after the loan period has expired, you will immediately be charged an overdue fine. The amount for fines can be found here: https://www.ub.uni-paderborn.de/en/library-use-and-borrowing/loan-fees

With the start of the new semester, it is time to stop by at the library! In this post, lets cover the basic library usage.

Activating library card:
First semester students need to get their library card activated before using it for the first time. This can be done at the library registration desk.

Library account:
Your library account can be used to check for your current loans, reserved items, fines, end of loan period of your borrowed items and possibility of extensions. You can also check if the book you need is available in the university library catalog (https://katalog.ub.uni-paderborn.de/). The shelf number where the item can be found and the number of available items is also shown here. You can login to your account using the library card number and password which is your date of birth by default.

Reserving:
You can reserve items in your library account and will be notified by e-mail when the item is ready which you can collect from the self-collection area or circulation desk within 7 days.

Borrowing:
After you find your book, you can check out using the self-issuing machines or go to the circulation desk at the entrance of the library. The normal loan period is 30 days which can be extended using the library account (if there are no reservations from other borrowers and the total loan period has not extended one year). It is possible to borrow all items from the library other than the ones marked with a red label. The items marked with a yellow label are short term loan items which means they can be borrowed only for one day and it is not possible to extend the loan period.

To be continued… Stay tuned!
