Beautiful Bali!? - Part 1of Part II

Slide 2: Hinduism arrived in Bali through Indian traders, blending with local beliefs to become the dominant religion before the arrival of Islam. Balinese Hinduism developed unique practices and was officially recognized in 1959, despite facing challenges after Indonesian independence.

Slide 3: Even though, Hinduism only represents 1.7% of Indonesia's population, it is the predominant religion in Bali (87%), making it the third-largest religion in Indonesia. Hindu Buddhist civilizations have had strong influence on Javanese art and culture, which is why Hindu kingdoms thrived in Sumatra, Kalimantan and Java from the 5th to 13th centuries.

Slide 4: Balinese Hinduism differs from Hinduism in India. The caste system is not widely practiced in Bali, and there are variations in celebrations, prayers, and temple architecture.

Slide 5 and 6: In Balinese Hinduism, the Sw****ka is a prominent symbol. Balinese Hindus believe in the influence of spirits on human life and seek balance through daily offerings (sesajen). Women honor gods and ancestors with sesajen on household altars, while offerings on the ground appease malevolent spirits. The Mejejaitan ritual involves creating ceremonial offerings using specific materials to pay homage to spiritual entities.

Slide 7: Two important celebrations are Galungan and Nyepi. Galungan signifies the triumph of good over evil, followed 10 days later by Kuningan, when spirits return. Nyepi, the Balinese Hindu New Year, is observed as a day of silence (from the word "sepi" meaning quiet). During Nyepi, people abstain from regular daily activities like eating, cooking, and using lights.

BEAUTIFUL BALI?! – PART I
Slide 2: The island of Bali, which is about the same size as Mallorca, is a province in Indonesia and is located in the Lesser Sunda Islands. It has a population of approximately 4,363,000 people and the official language is Indonesian, although Balinese is primarily spoken as the everyday language. The predominant religion in Bali is Hinduism, which is practiced by 87% of the population.

Slide 3: Bali has a history of being occupied by the Dutch and the Japanese. It gained full independence after the recognition of the Republic of Indonesia. Hinduism is the largest and most important religion in Bali, which was introduced by Indian traders. The Balinese form of Hinduism is influenced by local beliefs and incorporates Buddhist concepts. Bali is home to around 20,000 temples (pura) and has a tradition of producing arak and tuak. Hinduism in Bali is not just a religion but a way of life.

Slide 4: The population of Bali has doubled since 1995, with approximately 30,000 expatriates now residing there. Tourism plays a significant role in Bali's economy, and the population is expected to continue growing. Australians are the most important tourists, with around 79,100 Australian visitors each year. Other important tourist markets for Bali include India, Russia, Malaysia, and South Korea.

Slide 5: Bali is popular due to its captivating culture, a wide range of activities, delicious food, and affordability compared to other tourist destinations. It offers opportunities for sunbathing on beautiful beaches, learning jewelry making, dining at inexpensive street-side eateries, practicing yoga, and sailing with local fishermen. Bali has been a pilot project for tourism in Indonesia, but the focus on Bali has led to issues of overtourism in the region.

Selamat pagi and welcome to our first post. We- the Indonesian course at the University of Passau- are working on a project about tourism in Bali this semester. Every week a new post will go online on different topics like the Subak system, history, and much more. Together we will explore the origins of the Balinese lifestyle and ask ourselves is Bali really the paradise we always see on Instagram?
