Sexual and Gender Minorities in International & EU Law – Farewell Conference for Thomas Giegerich 🌍✨

Two days of powerful insights, diverse perspectives, and inspiring discussions at the Europa-Institut, Saarland University!

Brussels Forum on EU External Relations Law 🇪🇺
Am 28. November 2025 fand in der Vertretung des Saarlandes bei der Europäischen Union in Brüssel das Brussels Forum on EU External Relations Law statt. Die ganztägige Fachkonferenz wurde vom Europa-Institut der Universität des Saarlandes organisiert und von Philipp Reinhold (Universität des Saarlandes) und Nicolaj Kuplewatzky (Gerichtshof der Europäischen Union) kuratiert.
Das Forum brachte führende Wissenschaftler:innen, Praktiker:innen sowie Vertreter:innen europäischer Institutionen zusammen, um zentrale rechtliche und politische Entwicklungen im Bereich der Außenbeziehungen der Europäischen Union zu beleuchten. Im Mittelpunkt standen eine Keynote Address von Prof. Roland Bieber sowie mehrere Paneldiskussionen, die aktuelle Schwerpunkte des EU-Außenbeziehungsrechts behandelten. Diskutiert wurden unter anderem:
• die gerichtliche Kontrolle im Bereich der EU-Außenbeziehungen,
• die Reichweite und rechtliche Ausgestaltung restriktiver EU-Maßnahmen,
• und die zunehmende Bedeutung “nicht-traditioneller “ Akteur:innen vor den Unionsgerichten.
Das Programm bot den Teilnehmenden einen umfassenden Überblick über aktuelle Reformdebatten und rechtliche Herausforderungen und ermöglichte gleichzeitig einen intensiven Austausch zwischen Wissenschaft und Praxis.
Die Veranstaltung wurde durch den Internationalization Fund der Universität des Saarlandes finanziell unterstützt.

Der Eduard-Martin-Preis wird jährlich von der Universitätsgesellschaft des Saarlandes e.V. für herausragende Doktorarbeiten vergeben.
Dr. Bianca Böhme erhielt die Auszeichnung für ihre Dissertation „Iura Novit Curia in Investment Treaty Arbitration – The Allocation of Responsibilities over the Ascertainment of Law“, in der sie sich mit der Rechtsanwendung von Amts wegen in der Investitionsschiedsgerichtsbarkeit beschäftigt. Dabei analysiert sie insbesondere, inwiefern Schiedsrichter in Investitionsschiedsverfahren vom Rechtsvortrag der Parteien abweichen dürfen - oder sogar müssen -, wenn andernfalls die korrekte Rechtsanwendung gefährdet wäre.
Das Dissertationsprojekt wurde von Univ.-Prof. Dr. Marc Bungenberg, LL.M., einem der Direktoren des Europa-Instituts, betreut. Nach ihrer Tätigkeit als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an seinem Lehrstuhl ist Dr. Bianca Böhme nun als Foreign Associate bei Busse Disputes in Frankfurt am Main tätig.
