Autonomous Systems Program

Autonomous Systems Program Welcome to the page of the Autonomous Systems Program at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg. Accredited since March 2006.

Autonomy, adaptability and network integration are characteristic features of complex IT systems. Conventional control systems and architectures are no longer adequate to realize the potential of these technologies completely, nor are they sufficient to master the complexity of such systems. The solution is to design selected components as "autonomous systems" which can act mainly by themselves wi

thout external control most of the time. In this context, autonomous mobile and biomimetic robots constitute the forefront of development. The international program "Autonomous Systems" offers multifaceted training in the fields of artificial intelligence and robotics, spanning a whole range of issues involved in the field. Topics covered include, but are not restricted to, autonomous agents, robot control architectures, mobile manipulation, navigation and control of mobile robots, learning and adaptivity, computer vision, real-time systems, distributed systems, sensor networks, micro-controller programming, and design and implementation of embedded systems. The four-semester program aims to challenge talented, motivated and dedicated students, and involves coursework as well as project work. A large portion of the program, including the preparation of the Master's thesis, involves research and development projects. The project work portion takes the form of an R&D project and a final thesis project. The program's affiliation with the Fraunhofer Institute IAIS, one of the leading research institutes in Germany and the largest organisation for applied sciences in Europe, provides an unparalleled opportunity for students to pursue extensive practical training in projects at the cutting edge of the field. These projects may also be carried out at a number of other research institutes or within externally-funded research projects at the university (for example, EU-funded projects RoCKIn, BRICS, XPERO, and RoSta as well as nationally-funded projects such as EmoRobot and AICISS). This helps to ensure a high-quality education in the field, and also offers problem-oriented training in soft skills such as project management and presentation. Students have the opportunity to carry out research work associated with industrial entities such as Fraunhofer IAIS and IPA, KUKA, GPS, BGIA, Infineon, Philips, Siemens, General Electric and Bertrand. Presentations by leading international guest speakers are scheduled regularly and help to further expose students to the state of the art in a wide variety of robotics-related fields. The number of places per semester is limited to 25 candidates only, thus ensuring the admitted students a high-quality education. An extraordinary level of commitment, pro-activeness, self-discipline and the ability to work well under pressure are expected of candidates. For more information visit http://mas.inf.h-brs.de.

Congratulations to Alex, who successfully defended his PhD "Skill Generalisation and Experience Acquisition for Predicting and Avoiding Ex*****on Failures" yesterday at RWTH Aachen University! The project was advised by our Prof. Paul G. Plöger and Prof. Gerhard Lakemeyer from RWTH Aachen University.

Alex completed his dissertation titled "Skill Generalisation and Experience Acquisition for Predicting and Avoiding Ex*****on Failures" in a cooperative PhD project with RWTH Aachen

As you may have heard, this year marks 20 years of the b-it Institute and our own Autonomous Systems Programme. As our alumni, and a great source of pride for us, you are all cordially invited to join the celebratory event online via zoom on November 11! This is very much a story of your making too after-all :)

As part of the program, our founding directors, Prof. Dr. Armin B. Cremers (Uni Bonn), Prof. Dr. Matthias Jarke (RWTH Aachen) and Prof. Dr. Kurt-Ulrich Witt (H-BRS) will give you a warm welcome together with Prof. Plöger, who is currently the co-director of b-it. Mr. Thomas Trännapp, the permanent representative of the chancellor of RWTH Aachen University will also be opening the event.

We are honoured to have the keynote speech given by the renowned professor and honoured member of our advisory board Dame Wendy Hall from the University of Southampton. The program also includes a poster session where 7 of our master’s students as well as alumni who are now PhD candidates, will present their scientific research. A further 14 such poster presentations will also be given by members of the other two b-it programs: Life Science Informatics (Uni Bonn) and Media Informatics (RWTH Aachen). During the fishbowl discussion, master’s students, PhD candidates, alumni and friends of b-it can pose questions to our esteemed panelists on current topics and trends in computer science. To close the event, the b-it advisory board will award the best students' posters their prizes. To conclude the anniversary celebration, the poster awards will be given by the speakers.

We hope that you will use this opportunity to pose questions via the chat function to the members of our board during the fishbowl discussion. They are:

We are happy to announce that, after more than two years, we are finally able to continue our tradition of MAS parties this semester! The MAS party allows us to celebrate the international spirit of our program, but it also gives students an opportunity to meet professors, staff members, and sometimes MAS alumni in a casual setting.

Our next party will take place on Wednesday, May 11th, starting at 17:30 in our Mensa (and outside, if the weather conditions allow it).

Everyone from MAS is invited to the party — students, staff members, Alumni and professors — and you are also welcome to bring your significant others and/or children.

Traditionally, everyone joining the party brings some (preferably home-made) dish, but don't feel pressured to bring anything if cooking is not your thing or you don't have enough time for it — even if only a few people bring food, there is usually more than enough for everyone. If you do bring food that you've cooked in advance, you can warm it up in C069 — we have both a microwave oven and a baking oven there. You could also prepare your food in C069, provided that you clean everything afterwards.

Some drinks will be provided by us (both beer and something non-alcoholic), but we cannot guarantee that there will be enough drinks for everyone; thus, you can also bring your own beverages depending on what you are planning to drink.

If you want to get excited about the party in the meantime, you can take a look at some pictures from our last party that took place in October 2019: https://www.h-brs.de/de/inf/photo-gallery-mas-party-fall-2019.

Hope to see all of you there!

To our recent graduates: On Saturday, March 26th, our university's alumni office is offering the possibility to take pictures with a graduation cap and gown. In case you would like to have such pictures and don't want to wait until the next graduation ceremony, mark this day in your calendars and head to the university.
