INTERNATIONAL HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY

Every year on January 27, we commemorate the liberation of those who survived the concentration camp Auschwitz and its symbolic significance about the Holocaust.
In addition to reflecting on the past, remembrance of this day must also consider the present and the future.
The Elie Wiesel Research Center honors the victims' memory and helps carry forward the messages of survivors.
We want to draw your attention to the "Aktionswoche" (January 22-30) of the student body, during which various events on Holocaust memory, Anti-Semitism, and right-wing extremism will be offered.

INVITATION TO AN INTERRELIGIOUS/ INTERCULTURAL DISCUSSION

In connection with the current exhibition "Invisible in the middle of society? - Showing your face against anti-Semitism!" by Lissi Maier-Rapaport and Peter Krullis in the Theologicum, there will be an interreligious/intercultural discussion on the topic of anti-Semitism on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at 5.30 pm.
Because of the media coverage, it becomes apparent how topical this issue has become again in Germany since October 7, 2023. The gathering will primarily be about encounters and, not most minor, positive perspectives.

We cordially invite you to attend.

Participants will include Prof. Dr. Fahimah Ulfat (Professor of Islamic Religious Education at the Center for Islamic Theology), Rabbi Dr. Asher J. Mattern (Lecturer in Jewish Theology at the Institute for Ecumenical and Interreligious Research), and Prof. Dr. Reinhold Boschki (Chair of Religious Education and Head of the Elie Wiesel Research Center) and their teams.

The meeting point will initially be in the main room of our exhibition, in front of the cafeteria.

ANTI-SEMITISM IN OUR SOCIETY

On January 9, 2024, the anti-Semitism commissioner of Baden-Württemberg, Dr. Michael Blume, was invited to the Theologicum to talk. The topic of the evening, Anti-Semitism in Our Society, led to a lively exchange in the packed lecture hall of the Theologicum. Visitors and guests were welcomed by the Dean of the Faculty of Catholic Theology, Prof. Dr. Andreas Holzem, followed by a greeting from the Vice-Rector of the University of Tübingen, Prof. Dr. Karin Amos. According to Amos, the high level of response to the event demonstrated the topicality and importance of the subject. This was followed by a talk by Dr. Blume, who studied and completed his doctorate in Tübingen. In his talk, Blume emphasized that the danger of anti-Semitism should not be underestimated and appealed for people to change themselves, in particular to push back against anti-Semitism. He expressed his message by referring to the Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel and his novel Night.
The subsequent panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Claudia Guggenmoos (keb Reutlingen), led to fascinating insights and an exciting exchange with the audience. Guests were Susanne Jakubowski (Council of Religions Stuttgart & IRGW), Prof. Dr. Jean Ehret (LSRS), Dr. Asher Mattern (Jewish-Islamic Research Center) and Alon Bindes (JSUW).
During the evening, all speakers emphasized the importance of talking to each other and not just about each other. Thus, a profitable and instructive dialog took place.
The Faculty of Catholic Theology organized the event with the keb Reutlingen and Tübingen, the KHG Tübingen, and the LSRS.

CONTEMPORARY WITNESS TALK ON THE SHOAH WITH ERNST GRUBE

On 12 December 2023, the KHG Tübingen, in cooperation with the Institute for Social Science Research, Education and Counselling (ISFBB) e.V. and the Elie Wiesel Research Centre, hosted a contemporary witness talk with Ernst Grube.
After a brief introduction by moderator Birgit Mair (ISFBB), the Shoah survivor, who was connected via Zoom, began by telling the participants about his childhood in Munich as a half-Jew. Grube first mentioned the year 1938, which was significant for him on the one hand because of the Reichsprogramnacht. On the other hand, the family was split in two, as he and his two siblings were sent to a Jewish children's home. The children spent three and a half years there before being deported to the Milbertshofen ghetto in 1942. After this barrack camp was dissolved, they were sent to a monastery and lived there for about six months until it was disbanded, too. Things took a turn in 1943 when he and his siblings were reunited with their parents, who lived in two small rooms in Munich. In February 1945, his mother and children were deported to the completely overcrowded Theresienstadt concentration camp. He reported how German soldiers shot into the camp, and he only survived this situation with great luck. The concentration camp was liberated on 8 May 1945. The Grube family survived and could return to their father in Munich.
After Grube's talk, there was the opportunity to ask questions and then chat over a drink and gingerbread.
