A NEW CALL FOR AEC GLOBAL TEAMWORK PROJECT AT STANFORD UNIVERSITY

Project Content:

Basic ideas of research and education at the Project Based Learning Lab at Stanford University
P5BL (Problem-, Project-, Product-, Process-, People-Based Learning)
PBL Global Teamwork EcoSystem (people, places, collaboration applications, devices, network infrastructure)
Relationship between architects, engineers, construction managers and others in multidisciplinary projects
Learn how to use IT efficient in construction
Cash Flow modelling and analysis
PPP project
Teamwork


Project Description:

The AEC Global Teamwork project is considered to be a project-based learning experience focused on identifying the practical side of the construction projects and the real life based activities that produce a product for the clients bringing together the academia, practitioners and students from different disciplines all over the world. The project engages such disciplines as architects, structural engineers, MEPs, construction managers and life-cycle financial managers (LCFM).

The AEC student teams work on a university building project. The project specifications include:

Building program requirements
Real world university campus site that provides local conditions and challenges for all the disciplines,
Budget for the construction of the building
Time for construction and delivery
The project is divided into two phases:

1. Winter phase (January-March 2017), when the concept of the building should be developed and

2. Spring phase (March/April-May 2017), when the project should be developed.



Project Schedule:

January 11 – all the selected students arrive in the Bay Area
January 12 – official kick-off
January 13-14-15 – Team building workshop – all students are required to participate in person at Stanford
January 16 (Mon) - all students travel back to their university
March 17 (Fri) – Cyber Team presentation - Winter Quarter Concept Development
May 12 Friday – Final AEC project presentation and celebration - all students are required to participate in person at Stanford.

It should be kept in mind that besides these days the project involves classes every Friday (Cyber spase) and active work during the whole duration of the project.



Project Assessment:

Active involvement, teamwork, weekly presentations, fishbowl session, final presentation.

The project can be selected both as a Student work as well as a Project with 12 ECTS (Das Projekt wird als Studienarbeit anerkannt. Die Auslandscredits sind mit dem Projekt erfüllt).



Application Process:

1. Send your application documents (please, see the contacts below), that include:

CV
One page statement of purpose (300-350 words) on why you should be considered for this year AEC Global Teamwork program.
The deadline for the applications is October 30, 2016.

2. Interviews of the selected candidates in November, 2016 (the dates to be announced).

3. Selection of the successful candidates-December, 2016.

The selected candidates have to bear the costs for travelling to Stanford (for the kick off meeting and the final presentation). The information of possible support scholarships must be checked in the International Office.

Mada Dahana, a PhD candidate from Indonesia, joined the KC@W since spring 2014 under Government of Indonesia scholarship.
His research focus is the reliability and sustainability of PPP delivery mode in public infrastructure provision in Indonesia. The research would study the internal and external factors which affect the choice of PPP schemes under dynamic situational contexts. The results would be an approach model to predict the reliability of PPP to contribute in public infrastructure utilities.

Collins Ameyaw, PhD candidate from Ghana, joined the KC@W in October 2014 with DAAD scholarship.
His research focus: After more than two decades of Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) adoption and implementation, academics and practitioners are yet to arrive at a consensus on the Value for Money (VfM) delivery of PPP procurement route. It has been suggested that the perceived inability of PPPs to achieve VfM is due to the fact that the quantum of risk transfer to the private sector is highly insufficient to justify the much trumpeted VfM. To resolve the outlined challenges, partners in PPPs have been advised to address the issue of risk pricing and its allocation. The focus of my study is therefore to develop a win-win fair risk pricing model/framework capable of offering VfM to all parties in PPP transactions.

Real life seminar on PPP in transport with Mr. Ling
From Mai 13th-17th Mr. David Ling, senior lecturer from Manchester University, gave an intensive one-week seminar on “Planning and Procurement of urban Light Rail projects”. During the seminar the students developed and presented an application for a fictitious PPP project for urban light rail traffic being put out to tender. Mr. Ling closed the seminar with a role play in which the students pretended to be different stakeholders of the project and discussed solutions.

20th Generation of the AEC Global Teamwork Project at Stanford University is just getting started. Four Bauhaus students are part of the journey (three Lifecycle & Financial Mangers and one Civil Engineer) thanks to stips by our International Office and Graduierten Kolleg. There are two major challenges this year. First is Leapfrog Sustainability and second is Whole Lifecycle Costs. Knowledge Centre@Weimar at NASS conference in Frankfurt!

First research results of KREIS project about economic feasibility studies regarding decentralized waste water and energy systems were presented at NASS conference in Frankfurt.
