📍 Join SustainERA at Arvamusfestival 2026!

Is degrowth a sign of failure — or a collective survival strategy? How can we respond to today's overlapping ecological, political, and social crises while imagining more just and sustainable futures?

🌿 On 7–8 August, the SustainERA research team invites you to join a series of workshops and discussions exploring alternatives to growth-centred development and pathways towards collective resilience.

🔹 7 August | 2:00–4:00 PM
SustainERA Futures Visioning Workshop (in English)
Facilitated by Halliki Kreinin and Amy Shackelford, this interactive workshop invites participants—especially young people—to imagine just, resilient futures and explore how collective action can drive meaningful change, even when political transformation feels distant.

🔹 8 August | 10:30 AM–12:00 PM
Degrowth as a Collective Survival Strategy (in English)
Moderated by Amy Shackelford, with Grete Arro, Dušan Pajović, Ayan Shamchiyeva and Jaanus Terasmaa. Together, they will discuss whether degrowth can be understood not only as a critique of growth-centred economies, but also as a practical decolonial strategy rooted in mutual aid, care, community resilience and collective survival.

Petromasculinity: How the Oil Industry Gets Alpha Males to Dance to Its Tune (in Estonian)
This discussion explores the links between petromasculinity, climate denial, racism and misogyny, and examines how fossil fuel interests shape political narratives and public debate.

In addition to these events, SustainERA researchers will contribute to several other festival discussions on climate policy, education, environmental justice, public expertise, mental health, sustainability, and democratic futures.

🇰🇪Today we hosted a delegation from Strathmore School Of Tourism and Hospitality in Kenya: Dean dr David Chiawo, lecturer PhD Peggy Ngila and School Manager Ms Veronica Muniu. Guests showed great interest in our international micro-degree programmes, teacher training and lifelong learning — we discussed possibilities for organizing a conference on these topics in Kenya.

🇪🇪In addition to Ms Sigrid Aruväli, Head of Head of Centre for Innovation in Education TLÜ Haridusinnovatsiooni keskus / HIK, the meeting was attended by Mr James Sunney Quaicoe, a Research Fellow at the TLÜ digitehnoloogiate instituut / School of Digital Technologies, and Mr Moses Kigonya, an alumnus of the international micro-degree program.

🌍In recent years, Tallinn University has actively developed cooperation with African partners. Ongoing projects in Ghana and Kenya support the development of teacher training, the implementation of educational reforms, and the enhancement of digital learning capabilities. Additionally, education specialists from Kenya and other African countries are participating in the university’s international Educational Innovation and Leadership micro-degree program.

🇺🇬Ugandan Education Official Explores Opportunities to Implement Estonian Educational Practices🇪🇪

🏫On June 4, James Brian Ntwatwa, president and founder of the Ugandan organization Incredible Youth International, visited Tallinn University. The purpose of the meeting was to learn about Estonia’s experiences in the fields of educational solutions, school management, and educational innovation, and to discuss possibilities for implementing them in Uganda.

🎓During the meeting, we presented Tallinn Universitys activities in the fields of teacher training, educational management, and educational innovation. We also discussed opportunities to involve Ugandan education specialists in international study programs and collaborative projects.

🌍In recent years, Tallinn University has actively developed cooperation with African partners. Today, Kai Pata, Head of Tallinn University’s SustainERA project, meets with European Commission Executive Vice-President Teresa Ribera to discuss Europe’s green transition and the Clean Industrial Deal. 🤝🌱

The focus is SustainERA’s OpenLab model - linking research, education, and community innovation with real-world decision-making.

Europe’s transition depends not only on technology, but on people and communities who can understand and drive change. 🌿

Through OpenLabs, citizens, businesses, schools, and public actors co-create sustainable solutions and build the skills needed for a greener future. 🌱🎓

4 countries, one shared mission: rethinking tech in early childhood education 🌍

At the end of May, students and lecturers from Germany, Finland, Ireland and Estonia gathered at Tallinn University to explore how digital technology can be meaningfully used in kindergartens and primary schools. 💻👶

The week combined lectures, hands-on workshops, GPS art, and AR-based city exploration, along with an inspiring visit to PROTO Invention Factory. Participants also observed real learning environments at Kullatera Kindergarten and Pääsusilma Kindergarten, connecting theory with everyday practice. 😍

Programme ended with international team presentations sharing ideas on how to integrate technology thoughtfully into early education. 🌱💡
