🎤 Guest Lecture: “Memory under Stress” — by Prof. Dr. Oliver T. Wolf
As part of our Scientific Evening "Stress Across Mind and Body: Memory, Burnout and Hormonal Responses", we are pleased to welcome Professor Oliver T. Wolf from Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, to deliver a keynote guest lecture.
👨🏫Professor Wolf is Head of the Department of Cognitive Psychology at the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience. His team studies how acute and chronic stress, particularly via the stress hormone cortisol, influences learning, memory consolidation, retrieval and extinction processes in humans. Combining social experiments, pharmacological interventions and functional neuroimaging (fMRI), his work seeks to understand how stress shapes the brain systems involved in memory, especially the amygdala, hippocampus and prefrontal regions.
💬In his talk, 'Memory under Stress', he will:
- Explain how stress hormones can have opposing effects on memory storage (consolidation) and retrieval;
- Show why we tend to remember emotionally significant or stressful events vividly, yet may struggle to recall learned information in stressful situations such as exams.
- Present evidence from experimental studies in humans at both behavioural and neural levels.
He will also discuss what these findings mean for resilience, well-being, and vulnerability to mental health difficulties in susceptible individuals.
This lecture offers a research-based perspective on why individual responses to stress are important for everyday cognitive functioning and long-term mental health.
