🎓 Avapauk 2026 – kicking off the new academic year, School of Economics and Business Administration style! 💥

After the University of Tartu’s opening ceremony, first-year students gathered under the School of Economics and Business Administration flag and joined a procession to the Delta Centre, where the new academic year was officially kicked off.

In front of the Delta Centre, new students were welcomed with speeches, photos and snacks. Afterwards, students headed to information sessions for their study programmes and introductions to student clubs.

Students of Quantitative Economics, Innovation and Technology Management, and Business Administration also took part in a meet-and-greet with lecturers, giving them a chance to get to know both each other and the people of the School of Economics and Business Administration right at the start of the academic year.

We wish all our students an exciting, active and successful new academic year! 💙

In memoriam – Siim Kallas (1948–2026)

We mourn our longtime colleague, teacher, and friend Siim Kallas. We have lost a man for whom the University of Tartu and its School of Economics and Business Administration remained deeply important throughout his life – an alma mater like a lighthouse that gave him direction and values.

Despite holding demanding positions in Estonia and across Europe, he always found time for students, colleagues, and the faculty. He brought to the lecture hall an experience that cannot be learned from textbooks, uniting economic theory, public governance, and the practice of finance with international insight. His bond with the University of Tartu spanned nearly six decades.

As a colleague, we remember him as a person of broad thinking, sharp analytical ability, dignified candour, and warm humour. His passing leaves a great void, but we take comfort in knowing that his influence will live on in the hundreds of students, colleagues, and alumni he taught and inspired.

Why do so many attempts to distribute authority fail—even in organizations deeply committed to decentralization of authority? 🧐

In the article, Veiko Valkiainen argues that the answer lies in the cognitive, motivational, and emotional residues of learned helplessness shaped by prolonged exposure to hierarchical conditioning.
