𝐒𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐒𝐫𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐚 spent 11 years at the University of Tartu, first as a postdoctoral researcher and later as Professor of Internet of Things. Today, he is a professor at the University of Hyderabad, while remaining connected to Tartu as a visiting professor and honorary head of the Mobile & Cloud Lab. Read the interview with him. ☁️📱

🤔 Do digital media harm our cognitive abilities?

A new paper published in 𝑁𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝐻𝑢𝑚𝑎𝑛 𝐵𝑒ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑖𝑜𝑢𝑟 and co-authored by Associate Professor Jaan Aru offers a different perspective.

🗣️ “The central idea of our paper is that repeated exposure to immediate, low-effort rewards may change how valuable our brain perceives cognitive effort to be. As a result, we may increasingly prefer activities that provide immediate gratification, even when dedicating ourselves to a more demanding task would be more beneficial in the long run,” explained Jaan Aru.

The authors refer to this process as 'effort recalibration' and call for further research to test this hypothesis.

🧐 University of Tartu Institute of Computer Science bachelor’s students Smaragda Luchia Sarana, Tuudur Jürgen Utt, Armin Liiv and Karl Prink created a solution as part of the software project course that helps the institute’s industry collaboration team add company data to its customer relationship management system on the Notion platform more quickly and conveniently. 💻

💊 Researchers from the Health Informatics Research Group showed that large language models can identify, with high accuracy, why patients stop using antidiabetic medications or statins based on doctors’ electronic clinical notes.

According to Hendrik Šuvalov, Junior Research Fellow in Health Informatics, doctors’ notes contain a lot of valuable information about patients’ treatment journeys that has so far been difficult to analyse at scale.📊

The study’s greatest value, however, lies in the methodology: using language models to transform previously hard-to-use clinical free text into a research-ready dataset. This can help researchers better understand treatment pathways and support evidence-based decision-making in health policy.
